- Meet the technicians, team managers and leaders behind the iconic orange vans - not just Recruitment
- Learn about the RAC as one organisation and understand the difference between Patrol and SMR
- Ask honest questions about the work, lifestyle and expectations
- Fast‑track through the recruitment process – all in a couple of hours

Two Technical Careers. One RAC.
Every RAC technician plays a vital role in keeping people moving. What differs is how you do that, and this open day helps you explore both paths.
Roadside Patrol Technician
- You’re there when people need help the most.
- Diagnosing and repairing vehicles at the roadside
- Working independently in a fast‑paced, reactive environment
- Everyday is different – from batteries and tyres to complex fault‑finding
- You start and finish your day from home, in a fully equipped RAC van
Mobile Vehicle Technician (SMR)
- You focus on planned, high‑quality repair and servicing.
- Pre‑booked appointments at members’ homes or workplaces
- Structured schedules with time to do the job properly
- No emergency call‑outs or roadside recovery
- In‑depth servicing, diagnostics and repairs you’d usually see in a workshop
Both Patrol and SMR roles are technical positions, so you’ll need:
- A Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (or equivalent)
- A full UK driving licence
- A customer‑focused approach and confidence working independently
You don’t need to choose before attending – we’ll help you work out which role fits your experience, preferences and strengths.
Why Technicians Choose RAC
Across both Patrol and SMR, you’ll benefit from:
- Colleague Share Scheme – become a co‑owner in RAC’s future
- 23 days holiday + bank holidays (rising to 25 with service)
- Group Personal Pension – up to 6.5% employer contribution
- Life Assurance – 2x salary (4x for pension members, flex up to 10x)
- Family leave support & 24/7 wellbeing service
- Free RAC Ultimate Breakdown Cover from day one
