Job Description
The Histology Technician is responsible for obtaining and preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination. This includes grossing, fixation, cutting, mounting, and staining tissue samples for dermatopathologist review.
Responsibilities
- Accession, receive, and prepare tissue specimens.
- Perform grossing and inking if qualified.
- Prepare media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions.
- Process tissue: embedding, microtomy, staining, cryostat use, and freezing.
- Label and prepare slides; perform quality control.
- Examine slides under a microscope to detect abnormalities.
- Maintain instruments, equipment, and work areas.
- Log, file, track, and store specimens and slides.
- Maintain lab supply inventory and documentation, including QA/QC logs.
- Adhere to compliance and training requirements.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in histology procedures and techniques.
- Knowledge of tissue processing, including embedding, microtomy, and staining.
- Experience in slide examination and quality control.
- Ability to maintain laboratory equipment and work areas.
- Experience: 2+ years preferred.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Education: Associate’s degree required.
- Completion of a NAACLS-accredited histology program.
- Certification: HT (ASCP) or eligibility to sit for the exam (must certify within one year).
- CLIA Requirements: 60 semester hours with specific coursework and lab training.
Work Environment
This role operates within a new state-of-the-art pathology lab with advanced technology. The position offers opportunities for learning and advancement within the organization, including Mohs work. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $33.00 – $38.00/hr.
