Overview

RAC, in conjunction with North London Garages, has opportunities for Apprentice Service Maintenance & Repair Technicians. The RAC is the UK\'s leading breakdown service provider, delivering best-in-class motoring services. This apprenticeship combines college learning with hands-on training and supports ongoing career development within a large national company.

Responsibilities

  • As an apprentice mobile mechanic, complete services, repairs, and diagnostics at customers\' homes or workplaces, offering a diverse range of experiences.
  • Access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgments on wear and serviceability.
  • Apply vehicle safety inspection and routine maintenance procedures using vehicle-specific data on cars, car-derived vans, or light commercial vehicles.
  • Prepare the vehicle and working area before the work activity, e.g., removing or mitigating slip and trip hazards; maintain and restore the work area during and on completion of the activity.
  • Store, maintain (including calibration checks), and return tools and equipment to storage; select and use tools and equipment, mechanical and electrical measuring tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Remove, repair, and replace vehicle tyres and balance wheel assemblies on cars, car-derived vans, or light goods vehicles.
  • Inspect, remove, and replace parts or components in steering, suspension, braking, emission, air conditioning, battery and charging, and fluid/filtration systems.
  • Apply state-of-health condition monitoring tests to high voltage batteries and chargers for electrified vehicles; apply four-wheel geometry checks and adjustments; isolate electrified vehicles for maintenance.
  • Record vehicle service, maintenance, parts replacement, or repair; communicate with customers and colleagues to identify needs and provide recommendations based on inspections and repairs.
  • Provide quotations for parts, products, and consumables; manage stock and parts storage, including ordering, checking, and stock rotation; follow organisational sales processes.
  • Demonstrate customer service principles, handle low-level customer inquiries, and support payment transactions and sales processes.
  • Apply team working principles and comply with equity, diversity, and inclusion guidance; communicate effectively in writing and verbally with customers, suppliers, colleagues, and managers.
  • Use information and digital technology systems; comply with GDPR and cyber security requirements; complete and record learning and development activities.
  • Follow health and safety procedures, environmental and sustainability procedures, regulations, standards, and guidance; segregate resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
  • Record and report on fluids and filtration checks; apply safe working practices when handling electrified vehicles.

Training and Qualifications

  • Training schedule: During your apprenticeship, you will complete a mix of college learning and on-the-job training. You will be employed by the RAC and attend college on block basis in Enfield, working toward achieving Level 2 Autocare Technician apprenticeship. The program combines college learning with hands-on training led by experienced apprentice team leaders, with diagnostic, repair, servicing, and inspection activities.
  • GCSEs: English and Mathematics at grade 4 or above (or equivalent). Other relevant qualifications and industry experience are welcome.
  • Essential skills: Communication, attention to detail, organisation, customer care, problem solving, analytical thinking, logical thinking, teamwork, creativity, initiative, patience and non-judgemental attitude.
  • Requirements: Applicants must be over 18 for insurance purposes, hold a full UK driving license (maximum 3 points). Travel to training centre and to customer locations may be required; dependant on scheduling. Expectation of driving a company van to and from breakdown locations.
  • Hours and start date: See employer interview details. Contracted hours average around 40 per week, with multi-shift arrangements.
  • Duration: 2 years, with potential to apply for full-time employment as a Mobile Mechanic upon successful completion of the apprenticeship. Starting salary in year one is £15,500, rising to the National Living Wage in year two; London Weighting may apply.
