Job Purpose

To support the Head of Building Control in delivering the Building Control service, including management of complex and high-risk building projects, supervision of inspectors, and deputising where required.

To undertake technical assessments, plan checking, site inspections, and enforcement activity in accordance with the Building Act 1984, Building Safety Act 2022, and Building Regulations 2010.

To work with the Building Safety Regulator and related bodies on “in-scope” and higher-risk buildings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise Building Control staff within competence limits
  • Assess and determine Building Control applications, including complex and high-risk schemes
  • Carry out site inspections and plan examinations
  • Lead on enforcement activity, including notices and legal proceedings
  • Assess dangerous structures and coordinate urgent remedial action
  • Maintain case records, trackers, and compliance documentation
  • Liaise with internal teams, external agencies, contractors, and stakeholders
  • Contribute to service reporting, performance management, and ISO 9001 processes
  • Deputise for the Head of Building Control as required
  • Participate in dangerous structures rota, including out-of-hours response

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent in Building Control, Surveying, Engineering or related field
  • Chartered membership (RICS, CABE, CIOB or equivalent)
  • Class 3 Building Inspector registration (or equivalent competence)
  • Experience managing Building Control work or similar technical team
  • Knowledge of Building Act 1984, Building Safety Act 2022, Building Regulations 2010
  • Experience of high-risk and complex construction projects
  • Experience of enforcement and regulatory decision-making
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and evidence for legal proceedings
  • Full UK driving licence and ability to attend sites across locations
