The Site Manager will have full responsibility for the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of a waste transfer and processing facility. The role is accountable for managing site performance across people, plant, compliance, cost control, and service delivery, ensuring the site operates in line with Environmental Permits, legislation, and Collard Environmental policies while achieving commercial and operational targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day‑to‑day operation of the waste transfer station, ensuring optimal use of plant, equipment, and labour.
- Ensure all site activities comply with the Environmental Permit, waste legislation, and Company procedures.
- Complete and review daily site inspections, identifying and addressing non‑compliance, defects, or improvement opportunities.
- Oversee plant and equipment maintenance, ensuring daily and weekly operator checks are completed and defects promptly rectified.
- Coordinate material movements and site logistics in liaison with internal departments.
Compliance, Health, Safety & Environment
- Maintain full compliance with Environmental Permit conditions, EQMS, and regulatory requirements.
- Complete risk assessments and dynamic risk assessments for all site activities.
- Manage incidents, near misses, and corrective actions effectively.
- Liaise proactively with the Environment Agency, supporting inspections, compliance audits, and reporting requirements in conjunction with the Area General Manager.
- Ensure monthly waste returns and statutory documentation are completed accurately and on time.
- Lead, motivate, and develop the site team, setting clear standards, expectations, and objectives.
- Manage labour effectively to meet operational demands while controlling costs.
- Deliver clear communication across all levels, ensuring understanding of policies, procedures, and safe systems of work.
- Support training, competency, and performance management, building a strong safety and performance culture.
Commercial & Cost Control
- Manage site costs, productivity, and operational efficiency.
- Monitor stock levels (e.g. containers, bins) and ensure accurate record keeping.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, profitability, and service delivery.
The Successful candidate will have:
- WAMITAB qualification or equivalent.
- Significant experience managing a waste transfer station, processing facility, or similar waste operation (5+ years).
- Strong working knowledge of Environmental Permits and regulatory compliance.
- Proven people management skills, with the ability to lead, motivate, and manage diverse teams.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong organisational and cost management skills, with an understanding of commercial drivers.
- A proactive, solutions‑focused approach, able to work effectively in a demanding operational environment.
- Valid machine operator tickets inc 360 grab and loading shovel (desirable).
- Knowledge of waste transport operations and logistics (desirable).
- Experience with bulk haulage, low loader operations, or associated plant movements (desirable).
- Experience working closely with regulatory bodies such as the Environment Agency (desirable).
- Professional, confident, and decisive leadership style.
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to safety and compliance.
