We’re supporting a mixed secondary school in Basingstoke to appoint a Welfare Officer to oversee student health, medical provision and wellbeing support across the school. This is a key role within the pastoral structure, ensuring students feel safe, supported and ready to learn.

Role Details

  • Hours: 32.10 hours per week (8.30am – 3.30pm)
  • Contract: Term time only
  • Salary Scale: Grade 4 – £27,780 to £30,564 per annum (FTE)
  • Actual salary: £20,949 to £23,048
  • Location: Basingstoke
  • Start Options:
  • Option 1: Immediate start (from 9th March) on a long-term supply basis, with a view to a permanent contract
  • Option 2: Permanent contract following notice period (up to nine months)

Job Purpose

To lead on the day-to-day health and welfare provision for students, working closely with senior leaders, pastoral staff, families and external agencies to ensure medical and wellbeing needs are met effectively and safely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acting as the first point of contact for students who are ill or injured
  • Providing first aid and appropriate medical care during the school day
  • Supporting and monitoring students with ongoing medical conditions
  • Administering and managing medication in line with school policy
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential medical records
  • Liaising with parents and external agencies
  • Working closely with senior leaders, pastoral staff and SENDCo
  • Providing pastoral support to vulnerable students
  • Coordinating health initiatives such as vaccination programmes
  • Ensuring compliance with safeguarding and health and safety procedures

Person Specification

We are looking for someone who:

  • Holds a recognised First Aid qualification, or is willing to complete one (support can be provided)
  • Has experience working with children or young people
  • Demonstrates strong organisational and record-keeping skills
  • Communicates clearly and professionally
  • Shows empathy, discretion and sound judgement

An enhanced DBS check is required. Applicants must have the Right to Work in the UK.
