The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of automotive emissions, simulation tools, and regulatory compliance requirements. The role involves developing and applying simulation models to analyse, predict, and optimize gasoline engine emissions, ensuring compliance with environmental standards and improving engine performance. This role is responsible for designing and developing propulsion systems and capabilities in the system engineering function layer at the logical and physical solution domain.
You will be responsible for building and owning the generic system artifacts for new and existing powertrain propulsion concepts, capabilities and features in the (xHEV Diesel/Gasoline) space ensuring they are legally compliant, meet customer attributes expectations and are competitive in the market. Some of these artifacts include customer requirements mapping, feature/capability definition, use case analysis, logical architecture diagram, functional failure analysis, generic functional requirements cascade, test case mapping, target generation and issue resolution for Powerpacks.
You will lead the design of propulsion system concept physical base solution with balanced integration of its core system - Propulsive Torque / Aftertreatment and GasPath / Thermal systems / 48V Electrical Power supply - Battery, Inverter Converters / Fuels storage systems. Special requirements for this role include a good knowledge and experience in ICE PTs and transmissions with mid/high voltage electrification systems (MHEV/PHEV), torque, electrical and thermal energy management, aftertreatment system and gas-path, pollutant emissions and requirements in different markets, with understanding on strategy development, calibration and controls.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and size integrated PT propulsion systems, control strategy/SFW concepts.
- Support the development of the business's physical base solution system engineering and knowledge understanding the integration of the different core systems.
- Deliver robust requirements and targets on-cycle to programmes.
- Develop system artifacts (MBSE models, use case analysis, LAD, FFA/DFMEA/DRBFM, DVP, requirements, standards) off-cycle and update on-cycle as required.
- Identify, report and efficiently resolve system compatibility issues.
- Ensure functions adhere to specified engineering methods, computer tools and aids applied.
- Chair technical reviews/forums and resolve complex cross-functional issues.
- Develop methods & run technical studies into future technologies.
- Support the design & development of propulsion systems.
- Work with design teams to develop and optimise solutions considering multi-attributes within defined deadlines and time constraints.
- Support the continual development of tools and techniques which enhance capability, improve quality and robustness of virtual models.
- Conduct design analysis and development with utmost quality within agile framework.
- Mentor and coordinate team members, including junior engineers and apprentices.
Key Interactions in this role include xHEV Function Layer Chapter Lead and Chapter Head Prop System HW Integration, function layer other integration leads and functional layer engineers, domain technical delivery engineers, managers, HWSI/Powerpack Engineers, Group Product Owners & Product Owners Core, sub-systems, VSC SFW, commodity, calibration and controls engineers, SMEs managers, CAE and Test and Development Engineers & Managers.
Skills Knowledge and Experience Required:
- Essential: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in emissions simulation, engine design, or a related role.
- Relevant experience of working in a Systems Engineering environment - ideally within the Automotive Sector.
- Experience in applying Systems Engineering and in solving complex technical issues using a structured approach.
- Experience in model-based system engineering and/or any tool for Systems Architecting.
- Good understanding of 8D issue resolution and data statistics 6 sigma methods.
Desirable: Expert experience in the specific area of emissions, after-treatment, gas-path, base engines, HV systems, torque and energy arbitration.
