We currently have a fantastic opportunity to work within our Boston depot on a permanent basis.

The Workshop Technician is responsible for carrying out all work to a high standard within our busy municipal workshop facility, ensuring strict adherence to vehicle maintenance and compliance regulations.

In this role, you should be a strong team player, capable of adapting to pressure and change, and ensure all paperwork and fleet management systems are completed timely and accurately.

Maintaining fleet safety and keeping turnaround times efficient are at the forefront of the role.

The Workshop Technician will work very closely with all facets of the organisation including:

  • The Workshop Controller
  • Other Depot Technicians & Engineering Teams
  • SFS Staff, Customers, and Suppliers

What candidate are we looking for?

  • A minimum of 5 years’ technical experience on municipal vehicles (e. g., refuse, sweepers, etc.)
  • Recognised time served on an apprenticeship scheme with supporting technical evidence and qualifications
  • Full clean HGV driving license Category C (minimum)
  • Proven technical experience on vehicle electrical systems (12 and 24 volts), hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
  • A solid understanding of Health & Safety rules, regulations, risk assessments, and safe systems of work
  • An ability to work effectively both independently and as a progressive part of a workshop team
  • Strong communication skills with a commitment to treating customers fairly and providing clear, jargon-free information
  • A professional approach to conduct rules, demonstrating integrity, due skill, care, and diligence

The following additional skills would be an advantage

  • High attention to detail with strong multitasking and organizational skills to prioritize deadlines
  • Basic IT literacy with knowledge of MS Office systems
  • Completed VOSA vehicle inspection course or specific municipal vehicle manufacturing training
  • Familiarity with using fleet management systems (e. g., Fleetwave)

What will be your duties?

  • Carrying out routine repairs, maintenance, and servicing to a wide variety of municipal vehicles to a high standard
  • Actively repairing daily driver defects, ensuring all associated paperwork is completed in accordance with company processes
  • Ensuring all booked vehicles have work completed or are safely re-booked as a re-visit repair before being returned to the customer
  • Completing all necessary paperwork immediately upon finishing an inspection or task and returning it to the Workshop Controller
  • Fully utilizing the fleet management system (Fleetwave) to manage data and logging jobs accurately
  • Ensuring all ordered parts are correct for the required work and assisting other technicians with complex repairs when needed
  • Stepping in to cover the Workshop Controller’s duties as and when required by the depot
  • Keeping the workshop and parking areas clean, tidy, and safe, ensuring walkways are clear and all outside vehicles are securely locked with keys kept secure
  • Monitoring workshop tools and equipment to ensure they are safe, used properly, and returned to their correct storage location
  • Attending vehicle breakdowns when required (with a workshop van provided) and participating in a 24/7 weekly standby rota as needed
  • Maintaining a flexible and cooperative approach to daily workloads to properly service workshop and customer requirements
