Are you an experienced Workshop Chargehand looking for your next challenge? We currently have a fantastic opportunity to work within our Wellingborough depot on a permanent basis. The Workshop Chargehand is responsible for maintaining and repairing the vehicles operated by our local authority client, ensuring adherence to vehicle maintenance and compliance regulations. In this role, you should be highly analytical, maintain an expert level of customer focus, and ensure all paperwork is completed timely and accurately. Managing running defects to keep Vehicle Off Road (VOR) times to an absolute minimum is at the forefront of the role.


The Workshop Chargehand will work very closely with all facets of the organisation including:


· The Workshop Controller North Northants


· The Fleet & Engineering Teams


· Onsite Local Authority Customers

What candidate are we looking for?



  • The Workshop Chargehand will have a background from within a similar HGV engineering role, and proven experience in municipal vehicle maintenance

  • HGV Apprentice Served Qualification

  • Driving license HGV Class 2 (minimum)

  • Strong diagnostic, technical, and problem-solving skills using diagnostic computers and hand-held gauges

  • Excellent communication and listening skills with the ability to liaise directly with onsite customers

  • A high level of Health and Safety awareness, working in accordance with Risk Assessments and Method Statements

  • Good reading and computer literacy, with previous exposure to fleet management software (e.g., Fleetwave)

  • An expert ability to deliver results and adapt to pressure and change in a busy workshop environment

  • A commitment to regulatory standards, acting with integrity, and ensuring proper conduct rules are met

  • The following additional skills would be an advantage:

  • Leadership and managerial skills to support the progressive development of the team

  • In-depth knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems


What will be your duties?



  • The Workshop Chargehand is responsible for carrying out vehicle inspection examinations in line with VOSA procedure and Company policy

  • Testing, checking, and ensuring that all vehicle systems and components are safe, secure, and working properly

  • Diagnosing, isolating, repairing, or replacing worn parts ahead of a vehicle breakdown or damage

  • Managing the daily workshop workload to ensure smooth operations and creating/processing accurate jobs in Fleetwave

  • Ensuring the daily VOR report is sent to the Workshop Controller before 9:00 AM and providing a comprehensive daily fleet status handover

  • Obtaining accurate costings from suppliers, monitoring consumable stock onsite (oils/fluids), and completing warranty paperwork

  • Liaising closely with onsite customers to manage running defects efficiently and handle vehicle handovers

  • Supporting the customer by attending breakdowns during normal hours, and covering out-of-hours standby on a rota basis if required

  • Maintaining a safe, secure, and compliant working environment, ensuring all personnel use correct PPE
