Position Summary
The wage range for the Registered Clinical Health Information Management Specialist (CHIMS) – Health Records position is $32.77 to $33.83 per hour. Applicants who begin employment prior to obtaining registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) will be compensated at the uncertified rate of $30.56 to $31.90 per hour until registration is successfully completed.
Required
- Active member in good standing with the Canadian Health Information Management Association or certification with the Canadian Health Information Management Association obtained within six months of start date.
- Preference will be given to fully qualified candidates.
- Must have proof of current CPE credits or, a recent graduate (in the last 12 months) and can provide proof of diploma.
- Knowledge and use of Folio.
- Knowledge of Medical Staff Rules & Regulations, Public Hospitals Act, Personal Health Information Privacy Act and other pertinent legislation.
- For internal candidates, disciplinary and attendance records will be considered.
- Must have a satisfactory Criminal Record / Vulnerable Sector Check.
Duties
- Reviews health records quantitatively to ascertain that records meet necessary criteria, and reports errors and/or omissions.
- Monitors and maintains a system for charts that are past due and reports to Manager and notifies physicians that are delinquent in chart completion.
- Assembles records for permanent filing.
- Receives, evaluates and responds to correspondence, telephone requests and in‑person inquiries regarding release of health records.
- Attends court with the health record, under subpoena.
- Assesses information in health records and assigns codes according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD‑10CA) and Canadian Classification of Interventions (CCI) and maintains abstracting data base.
- Retrieves patient charts from previous admissions and directs to appropriate floor/unit on admission.
- Answers telephone, takes messages, screens and reroutes calls.
- Assumes responsibility for microfilming process.
- Files charts in main department and alternate storage areas.
- Participates in departmental QA Programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
