About The Role

Level: 5

Location: Southampton or London

Contract type: Permanent

The role sits within the Chief Data Office and reports to the Head of Data Platforms.

Team Management & Growth

  • Lead a team of data‑platform engineers through coaching, mentorship and technical guidance.
  • Support individual career development and performance feedback, creating growth opportunities for the team.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive and high‑performance team culture.

Technical Oversight & Delivery

  • Define platform engineering standards and best practices ensuring robust, efficient and secure platform configuration and delivery.
  • Guide the design and implementation of the platform to support federated usage by data engineering, reporting, advanced analytics and AI.
  • Review architecture and code, provide technical direction and resolve complex engineering challenges hands‑on when needed.
  • Ensure delivery of high‑quality, reliable capabilities aligned with business goals and engineering best practices.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with product managers, data scientists, analysts and business stakeholders to understand requirements and prioritise work.
  • Work closely with platform‑tenant teams to develop delivery processes that continually improve capabilities.
  • Translate business needs into actionable engineering detailed plans and ensure timely delivery of key projects.
  • Communicate clearly across technical and non‑technical teams to align on priorities and progress.

Operational Excellence

  • Promote operational stability and reliability of platforms and services through monitoring, alerting and incident response.
  • Advocate for high standards in resilience, security and compliance by collaborating with platform tenants and data governance teams.
  • Drive continuous improvement in development workflows and team productivity.

Qualifications

  • Degree in a technical discipline (e.g., computer science, engineering, maths, physics) or evidence of equivalent practical experience.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Proven experience in managing and growing technical teams within a complex business environment.
  • Strong technical hands‑on experience in designing, building and maintaining data platforms in an Azure, Databricks and Fabric ecosystem.
  • Experience creating services and support to allow capabilities to be federated with clear standards and guardrails.
  • Experience implementing batch and stream pipeline capabilities in a kappa architecture.
  • Setting technical direction and establishing platform engineering standards.
  • Managing roadmaps, sprint planning and delivery across multiple projects or squads.
  • Experience automating solution delivery through IaC and deployment pipelines to ensure stability, resilience and efficiency.
  • Experience running platforms with SLAs/SLOs, incident management and problem resolution.

  • Languages: Terraform, Python, SQL, PowerShell.
  • CI/CD: Azure DevOps pipelines for data platform deployments.
