About The Role

- Department: Research
- Contract: Fixed term contract - 12 month
- Location: London - Hybrid
We are looking for a Research Analyst to take responsibility for research coverage of UK smaller companies, with a particular focus on business relief qualifying AIM-listed investments and portfolios managed for inheritance tax (IHT) planning purposes. Reporting to the Head of Equity Research and AIM/Small cap, the role will combine fundamental company and sector analysis with practical support for investment managers, advisers and client-facing teams. The successful candidate will produce high-quality research, respond to investment queries and help communicate our small-cap and AIM investment thinking through written materials, presentations and webinars.
This is primarily an investment research role rather than a trading role. However, given the nature of the small-cap market, an understanding of market liquidity, position sizing and the potential impact of trading in less liquid securities would be beneficial.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct fundamental research on UK small-cap and AIM-listed companies.
- Maintain and develop research coverage relevant to AIM/IHT portfolios.
- Analyse company financials, business models, competitive positioning, management quality, valuation and key investment risks.
- Meet company management teams, brokers and other relevant market participants.
- Produce clear, insightful and actionable research notes and recommendations for internal investment audiences.
- Monitor existing investments and relevant developments across the UK smaller-company market.
- Contribute ideas and analysis to the wider Research team and investment process.
- Develop strong knowledge of the AIM market and investments used within IHT-focused portfolios.
- Key member of the AIM investment committee, which oversees portfolio and model construction.
- Support colleagues with questions relating to individual holdings, sectors, portfolio themes and the AIM market.
- Maintain an awareness of the investment considerations associated with Business Relief and IHT-oriented investing, working within the firm’s established tax and compliance framework.
- Help explain the investment case, risks and characteristics of AIM/IHT strategies clearly to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Act as an accessible point of contact for investment managers, advisers and other colleagues with questions on AIM, UK smaller companies and relevant holdings.
- Produce regular and ad-hoc research notes, market updates and investment commentary.
- Support Marketing and client-facing teams with investment content and materials.
- Present investment views through webinars, internal meetings, presentations and other communications.
- Translate detailed investment research into clear, concise messages suitable for advisers and clients.
Consumer Duty
As with all of our investment committees, the candidate needs to know how to embed consumer duty principles in their day to day, with regards to the strategy, in particular from a perspective of portfolio turnover, bid ask spreads and performance outcomes.
Essential About You
- Relevant experience in equity investment research, ideally covering UK equities, smaller companies or AIM.
- Strong fundamental company-analysis and valuation skills.
- Ability to form and articulate independent investment views.
- Strong written skills and experience producing investment research or similar analytical content.
- Confidence answering questions and presenting investment views to colleagues and broader audiences.
- Ability to communicate complex investment ideas clearly and pragmatically.
- Strong attention to detail and an interest in UK smaller companies.
- Ability to work with an investment manager who will carry out the portfolio implementation, and the traders on pricing/liquidity.
Desirable
- Previous experience researching AIM-listed businesses or UK small caps.
- Knowledge of IHT-focused investment strategies and Business Relief.
- Understanding of liquidity and trading considerations within UK smaller companies.
- Experience contributing to webinars, presentations, marketing content or client communications.
- CFA qualification, CFA progress, or another relevant investment qualification.
