The Role
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team. You will take ownership of complex mechanical design challenges, from concept through build, contributing directly to the development of cutting‑edge CNC machining centers and custom turnkey solutions. This is a hands‑on, high‑impact role for engineers who bring both technical depth and a genuine love of precision manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design of mechanical components and systems for large-format CNC milling machines, from concept to production‑ready drawings
- Perform 3D CAD modelling in SolidWorks and conduct FEA analysis (static and dynamic) to validate designs before build
- Create detailed manufacturing drawings with rigorous application of GD&T standards
- Design custom fixtures, workholding solutions, and specialized automation components for end‑user applications
- Contribute to R&D initiatives for new machine accessories and processes specific to large machine tool platforms
- Collaborate with Manufacturing, Service, Sales, and Marketing teams to drive design improvements and resolve field issues
- Work directly with vendors to develop strong supplier relationships and resolve technical issues
- Organize and lead design reviews, documenting decisions and managing design changes through the ECO process
- Support the Service team in retrofitting and upgrading legacy equipment
- Participate in hands‑on work alongside manufacturing and assembly teams to validate designs in practice
Required Qualifications
- 5–10 years of machine design or industrial automation design experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent
- Expert‑level SolidWorks: 3D modelling, SolidWorks Simulation, and assemblies
- Demonstrated experience with structural FEA (static and dynamic)
- Proficiency in GD&T and detailed 2D drawing creation
- Proven ability to design complex mechanical systems with high precision requirements
- Strong problem‑solving skills for multi‑variable engineering challenges
- Experience working in an ISO‑certified engineering environment
- Ability to travel internationally (US travel required)
Assets
- Background in large‑format or heavy equipment design
- Hands‑on experience with CNC machining, welding, or casting processes
- Proficiency in hydraulic and pneumatic system design
- Experience with metal additive manufacturing
- Knowledge of CAM software
- Experience with machine tool spindle, axis, or drive system design
What You Bring
- Deep mechanical intuition: the ability to anticipate how a design will behave in the real world
- A patient, thorough design process: you get it right before it goes to the floor
- Strong understanding of manufacturing and machining processes and how design decisions affect them
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal: you can explain complex designs clearly to both engineers and non‑engineers
- A collaborative approach with cross‑functional teams across the business
What We Offer
- Competitive base salary ($70,000 – $90,000) with performance bonus
- Company pension with RRSP matching and profit sharing
- Dental, vision, extended health care, and life insurance
- Employee assistance program
- On‑site parking
Beyond the package, you’ll work alongside a highly skilled team in a collaborative, precision‑focused environment and see your designs built, shipped, and running in manufacturing plants around the world.
