Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the CFD Analysis Manager.
  • Conduct computational thermal-hydraulic analysis to support the progressive design and development of RR SMR systems and/or components.
  • This analysis is anticipated to initially be focused on 1D fluid systems analysis done in Flomaster, but may include other analysis methods such as CFD or hand calculations focused on fluid dynamics and heat transfer.
  • Support the creation of Flomaster models for systems known to only handle single phase (liquid) flow of relatively low velocity and that, based on design maturity, would significantly benefit from analysis in Flomaster.
  • Liaise with system owners to explain and request the required input data to build models, engaging with relevant SMR stakeholders to gather additional data (e.g., Layout, components etc.).
  • System owners will advise on the initial system analyses required from the secondee to both test the model and output requisite information to support the system design.
  • Produce concise analysis reports detailing the model build and results that demonstrate model functionality in accordance with system designer requirements.
  • Support the sizing of key equipment e.g., pumps, pipes, heat exchangers, tanks.
  • Understand the capabilities, validation status and primary limitations of Flomaster in relation to the flow phenomena that the SMR fluid system designs need to consider.
  • Assess the capability of Flomaster for whether other systems would benefit from Flomaster modelling, particularly where more complex flow phenomena must be considered, for example, choked, two-phase and evaporating/condensing flows.
  • Adherence to the RR-SMR Gate Review Process.

Qualifications

  • Experience using Flomaster or other 1D fluid system analysis software.
  • Experience authoring, verifying, post-processing and reporting on CFD analysis (e.g., Ansys Fluent/CFX) including preparing geometry and meshing.
  • Robust understanding of relevant thermodynamic and fluid mechanic phenomena, including pressure drop/incompressible fluid flow component sizing calculations, heat transfer, two-phase (steam-water) flows, choked flows, pressure relieving processes and sparging.
  • Experience of process engineering principles.
  • Experience of systems engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of PWRs is desirable but not essential.
  • Minimum of a bachelor's engineering/physics degree equivalent.
