A Mechanical Design Engineer plays a crucial role in the Aerospace and Defence industry, ensuring that all products and processes meet the highest quality standards. We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Design Engineer with geared transmission systems and components experience to join our team.
Key Responsibilities:- Carry out detail design activities to meet the requirements of design for manufacture.
- Hand calculations and preliminary sizing of components, including material selection, shaft and bearing analysis, preliminary rotor dynamics, other drive system elements including structural components, couplings, lubrication systems and bolted joint.
- CAD activities including conceptual design, 3D and 2D modelling.
- Create component and complex assembly drawings.
- Drawing and technical documentation checking.
- BOM and gear data generation and engineering change control processing.
- Manufacturing drawings generation with a clear understanding and application of Design for Manufacture principles.
- Create deliverable documentation including Manuals, Installation and Maintenance instructions as necessary.
- Concession/Non-conformance assessment and resolution – including hand calculations as required, coordination with other specialist areas such as stress analysis etc.
You will work closely with cross-functional teams to carry out the design activities, investigate and analyse non-conformance reports, develop corrective actions, and implement effective solutions to prevent future occurrences.

Work Experience Required Skills (Technical Competency):- Candidate should be familiar with structural design practices and methodologies, including hand calculations to support design.
- Experience in designing mechanical components, parts, assemblies and subassemblies for heavy industry, power transmission systems, gear and gearbox.
- Knowledge about subsystems that impact the mechanical design/layout of the design.
- Proficient in 3D CAD package for both modelling and drawing, ideally Solid Edge.
- Ability to interpret and create high quality engineering CAD models and manufacturing drawings, including GD&T.
- Understanding and appreciation of structural analysis and knowledge of FEA/FEM (e.g., ANSYS Workbench).
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field or equivalent experience.
- Experienced engineer in design role/environment involving rotating machinery.
- Experience in heavy engineering industry, power transmission systems, gears and gearbox.
- Appreciation of bolted joint analysis, shock assessment in relation to geared transmission systems.
- Strong knowledge of quality management systems and industry standards (e.g., AS9100, ISO 9001).
- Proficient in root cause analysis and failure mode analysis techniques.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality and continuous improvement.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
