This job request is a combination of two similar requirements:
- Controls and Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer
- Senior Controls and Instrumentation (C&I) Modelling and Simulation Engineer
Controls and Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer
- Working with Process, Mechanical and Electrical plant systems Engineers to translate high level requirements into a specification for Control and Instrumentation (C&I) systems.
- Liaise with other disciplines to understand functional performance capabilities of components and systems to facilitate effective system design.
- Assess and substantiate that the design specification meets the requirements.
- Ensuring compliance against international standards in particular, IEC 61513, IEC61226 and IEC61508.
- Produce verification and validation plans, and define test plans to demonstrate that the C&I system requirements have been satisfied.
- Support to planning and implementation of policies and procedures related to the life cycle of C&I systems.
- Ensure that optimum solutions are provided for the RR SMR Nuclear Power Plant by supporting the procurement, operations, and maintenance aspects of the equipment.
- Contribute to the production of safety cases and provide support in liaising with regulators and independent nuclear safety assessors.
Senior Controls and Instrumentation (C&I) Modelling and Simulation Engineer
- Planning model development work within an agile framework.
- Development of the modelling and simulation and validation and verification environments, policies, procedures, and tool sets.
- Development of simulation model architectures and integration of system component models.
- Development of models and simulations suitable for C&I design activities and validation and verification of C&I functional requirements.
- Development of models, custom code and simulations suitable for real-time and accelerated simulation of nuclear power plant and C&I systems.
- Validation of Integration of Software models into simulation model architectures.
- Liaising with other disciplines to understand functional performance capabilities of components of the system to facilitate effective C&I design.
You will be accountable for delivering packages of work to time, cost and quality requirements. You will be involved in the development, validation and verification of software simulation models of the nuclear power plant and C&I systems using suitable modelling tools and software validation and verification techniques. You will work with the broader EC&I team and other teams/disciplines to support C&I design activities and validation and verification of C&I functional requirements. You will act as a responsible designer and intelligent customer dependent on the task you are working on. You will coach junior engineers, and the broader EC&I team in Modelling and Simulation techniques.
Work Experience:
- Knowledge and experience in the systematic design lifecycle of a C&I system including specification, design, assessment, verification, testing, installation, commissioning and maintenance of safety or process critical C&I systems.
- This together with a good understanding of the principles of designing systems to be functionally resilient to faults (such as redundancy and diversity) would be beneficial.
- Knowledge and experience of relevant industry standards for systems important to safety (e.g. IEC 61508, IEC 61226, IEC 61513).
- Knowledge and experience of applying systems engineering methodologies including Model Based Systems Engineering to C&I systems.
- Experience in taking information, understanding, and presenting it in an appropriate and compelling format, which includes formal communications to the appropriate stakeholders.
- The ability to provide technical oversight of the work carried out by others and making technical judgements/decisions on behalf of the RR SMR organisation i.e. discharging the intelligent customer role.
- Hold a degree level qualification in one or more of the engineering disciplines of electrical, electronics, instrumentation, control systems or mechatronics. Applicants without a degree who can nevertheless demonstrate suitable knowledge and experience may also be considered.

- Experience in dynamic/mathematical modelling and validation.
- Experience in software verification and validation.
- Experience in hardware/software integration is desirable.
Control Systems Design
- Knowledge and understanding of Control Theory and Control Laws.
- Control Systems Design.
High Integrity Systems
- Knowledge of nuclear or other high integrity industries.
- Knowledge and experience of complex safety critical systems or industrial process plants.
- Knowledge of Functional Safety standards such as IEC 61508 and 61513 is beneficial.
- Experience in Nuclear Power Plant Operation, Dynamics, Modelling, and Simulation is highly beneficial.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Experience in working with a range of functions, including technical and non-technical supporting functions.
- Experience in working with partner/supplier/customer organisations.
- Able to work well in a diverse team.
- A Degree qualification in one or more of the engineering disciplines of electrical, electronics, instrumentation, controls, mechanical or software, or physics with a demonstrable aspect of modelling, software development, and coding. Applicants without a Degree who can nevertheless demonstrate suitable experience may also be considered.
- Chartered Engineer status.
