The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for leading the development and delivery of detailed engineering designs across complex and multi-disciplinary projects. This role involves producing high-quality technical documentation, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and project requirements, and mentoring junior design staff. The Senior Design Engineer will act as a technical authority within their discipline and contribute to design strategy, integration, and assurance.
Key Responsibilities:- Lead the preparation of detailed engineering designs, drawings, models, and specifications to support project delivery.
- Oversee the design lifecycle from concept through to manufacturing, installation, and commissioning.
- Ensure design solutions meet applicable standards, safety requirements, and client specifications.
- Produce and review design documentation, including calculations, technical reports, risk assessments, and design justifications.
- Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams (e.g., mechanical, electrical, structural, systems) to ensure design integration and functionality.
- Review and approve designs produced by other team members and subcontractors.
- Conduct design reviews, participate in HAZOPs and design assurance activities.
- Support project planning activities, providing technical input into schedules, cost estimates, and resource requirements.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers and CAD designers, promoting best practices and continuous improvement.
- Degree-qualified in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Systems Engineering).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it (preferred).
- Typically 8+ years experience in engineering design, ideally within a regulated industry (e.g., nuclear, defense, aerospace, marine).
- Proficient in CAD and 3D modelling software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit).
- Strong understanding of relevant design standards, regulatory frameworks, and configuration control processes.
- Experience producing design deliverables within structured quality and project management systems.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Experience with design governance frameworks (e.g., Design authority processes, etc.).
- Understanding of document management systems.
- Familiarity with design for manufacture, installation, and maintainability.
- Previous experience in roles requiring security clearance or working within MOD/defense frameworks.
