We are looking for an experienced
Skilled Highways Operative
to join a highways maintenance team. The role involves vegetation clearance, strimming and general highway maintenance, working safely across a range of outdoor sites and supporting wider highways construction and maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities Carry out strimming, vegetation clearance and general highways maintenance.
Operate strimmers, saws, rollers, compactors and other relevant plant and equipment.
Assist with footway and carriageway works, kerbing, drainage, excavation and paving.
Drive vehicles and tractors where appropriately licensed.
Carry out routine checks and basic maintenance of vehicles, plant and equipment.
Follow health & safety, traffic management and environmental procedures.
Identify and work safely around underground services.
Work effectively as part of a team and interact professionally with colleagues and members of the public.
Be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions and undertake overtime, weekend or emergency work when required.
Essential Requirements Previous experience in highways, construction, grounds maintenance, vegetation clearance or a similar environment.
Good understanding of safe working practices, including PPE and manual handling.
Ability to operate strimmers and other relevant tools safely.
Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
Valid driving licence and access to suitable transport.
Willingness to travel between work sites.
Ability to work in adverse weather and challenging outdoor/site conditions.
Willingness to work outside normal hours when required.
Desirable Requirements NVQ Level 1 in Highways Maintenance or equivalent.
NRSWA qualification.
CSCS Health & Safety qualification.
Highways or roadworker trade qualification.
Experience operating rollers, compactors, saws or other specialist plant.
HGV licence/experience.
Forklift licence/experience.
Experience using underground service detection equipment.
Previous experience working specifically within a highways maintenance environment.
Working Conditions This is an outdoor role and may involve working in adverse weather, around traffic and on uneven or dirty sites. The role may include early starts, nights, weekends, overtime and emergency call-outs. Relevant training and PPE will be provided where required.
