Sign Services and Traffic Management Operative
to join their Operational Highways team. This is a practical, varied role where every day can be different, and where your work will have a direct impact on the safety of road users, the workforce and the wider community. Youll work as part of a dedicated team delivering a customer-focused and best-value service across Leicestershire, with occasional work in surrounding counties. What youll be doing Youll play an important role in delivering, installing, maintaining and collecting temporary traffic management signs and equipment. Youll also support wider highway maintenance and construction activities where temporary traffic management is required. Your responsibilities will include: Erecting and removing temporary traffic management signs and equipment safely and correctly. Delivering, collecting and storing temporary signage and equipment between depots and worksites. Helping plan and schedule resources and routes to ensure an efficient service. Reading plans and drawings relating to traffic management. Installing and maintaining temporary traffic management systems in accordance with Chapter 8 and the Code of Practice for Safety at Street Works and Road Works. Supporting road closures, diversions and other traffic management arrangements. Carrying out daily safety checks and routine maintenance on vehicles, plant and equipment. Using a range of equipment, machinery and power tools safely and effectively. Working closely with the Sign Shop and Traffic Management Technicians, including providing support during busy periods or emergencies. Taking part in a standby/call-out rota when required, helping to make sites safe during emergencies outside normal working hours. Acting as a lead operative when required, supporting colleagues and less experienced or temporary staff. Helping to ensure daily performance targets are achieved and raising any issues promptly with your supervisor or Site Team Leader. Supporting other Operational Highways activities when required, which could include drainage, general maintenance, road-mending, gully emptying, construction, surfacing and quick-response work. A role with responsibility Youll be expected to work safely and professionally at all times, following risk assessments, legislation and operational procedures. As a lead operative, youll help make sure that colleagues understand and follow health and safety requirements, including the correct use of PPE, safe lifting and handling, and temporary traffic management procedures. Youll also help less experienced operatives develop their skills and knowledge, providing guidance and support and helping temporary staff feel part of the team. Youll need to be comfortable working independently when required, using your initiative and responding quickly where changes are needed to keep a site safe. What were looking for Were looking for someone with practical highways, civil engineering or traffic management experience who is confident working outdoors and as part of a team. Ideally, youll have: NVQ Level 2 in Highways Maintenance or a similar qualification. Skilled Road Worker Trades Test Assessment. NRSWA Operative qualification. National Highways Sector Scheme

and
12D (T5) . A valid driving licence. A valid Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) licence, CPC training and current DQC card. If you don't hold all of the qualifications above, don't rule yourself out.

Your experience and knowledge You should have experience of working in a highways or civil engineering environment and ideally experience of: Installing, maintaining and removing temporary traffic management systems. Working with road closures and diversions. Acting as a banksman/signaller for drivers. Using underground detection equipment. Using IT, mobile technology and work-related systems. Working safely with plant, machinery and equipment. Youll also need a good understanding of: Construction health, safety and environmental requirements. Safe working practices. Traffic management requirements and

Working arrangements This is a varied operational role, and flexibility is essential. You may occasionally be required to work nights, weekends and public holidays, including in all weather conditions, to meet the needs of the service. There may also be a requirement to participate in a call-out/standby rota to respond to emergencies. Exclusion applies to employees aged under 21. Your normal working day will start and finish at the depot, with the main bases for this role being Mountsorrel and Croft. You will need to make your own way to and from the depot. You may also be required to travel to other depots and worksites across Leicestershire, and occasionally surrounding counties, as directed. Expenses and mileage will be paid in accordance with the applicable terms and conditions. The role may involve working as part of a team, with other gangs or operatives, or independently in accordance with lone-worker procedures. Youll also be expected to attend relevant training, meetings and health surveillance appointments as required and maintain your training and professional competency records.
