Yard Manager - Manufacturing / Operations
Location: Peterborough
Salary: £45,000 per annum
Hours: Monday to Friday
Type: Permanent
Working Pattern: Site based
The Role
This is a hands-on operational role for someone who likes things organised, safe and running properly.
You’ll take responsibility for 3-4 busy yard areas where large products and materials are stored, making sure everything is where it should be, movements are controlled, standards are maintained and the team knows exactly what needs doing.
You will not be sitting behind a desk all day.
Far from it.
You’ll be out in the yards, on your feet, checking stock, coordinating movements, keeping standards high and working closely with other managers across the operation to make sure everything flows as it should.
You’ll also manage a small team of around 4 Yard Operatives, with that team expected to grow as the operation develops.
This is very much an ownership role.
You’ll be the person people look to when it comes to yard organisation, safety, movement and control.
What You'll Be Doing
-
Taking day-to-day ownership of 3-4 yard areas
-
Making sure products, materials and equipment are stored correctly and safely
-
Maintaining clear, organised and well-controlled yard spaces
-
Managing and supervising a team of Yard Operatives
-
Allocating daily tasks and making sure priorities are understood
-
Monitoring workload and ensuring jobs are completed properly and on time
-
Coordinating the movement of products and materials around the yards
-
Working closely with Production, Operations, Logistics and other managers
-
Keeping track of what is coming in, what is going out and what needs moving
-
Making sure stock is located correctly and easy to identify
-
Supporting loading and unloading activity
-
Operating a Counterbalance FLT where required
-
Ensuring all forklift and yard movements are carried out safely
-
Monitoring housekeeping standards across all yard areas
-
Identifying safety risks, blocked access points or poor storage practices
-
Making sure pedestrian and vehicle areas remain safe and clearly controlled
-
Ensuring the yards remain compliant with site procedures and Health & Safety standards
-
Carrying out regular visual checks of yard areas and stored products
-
Reporting damage, shortages or issues quickly
-
Working with managers to improve layout, storage and yard efficiency
-
Helping introduce better processes as the operation grows
-
Supporting stock checks and inventory control where required
-
Coordinating with transport and logistics teams around collections and deliveries
-
Making sure drivers and visitors are directed correctly when entering yard areas
-
Keeping clear communication between the yard and the wider operation
What You’ll Need
You’ll need previous experience in a yard, warehouse, manufacturing, production or logistics environment.
This is not just a forklift role.
You need to be someone who can take responsibility for an area and make sure it runs properly.
We’re ideally looking for someone with experience in:
-
Yard management or yard supervision
-
Warehouse or logistics operations
-
Manufacturing or production environments
-
Supervising or managing a small operational team
-
Coordinating stock, materials or large product movements
-
Health & Safety in a busy operational environment
-
Loading and unloading activity
-
Yard organisation and housekeeping
-
Working closely with multiple departments
-
Managing changing priorities throughout the day
A valid Counterbalance FLT licence is highly desirable and ideally essential for this role.
You’ll also need to be physically comfortable being on your feet for most of the working day.
What Will Make You Good At This
You’ll notice things.
That matters more than people think.
A product stored in the wrong place.
A blocked route.
Something damaged.
A poor bit of housekeeping.
A movement that could have been planned better.
You’ll spot it and sort it.
You’ll also need to be confident managing people.
The current team is around four people, but it will grow, so we need someone who can set expectations, keep standards consistent and deal with issues properly when they arise.
Strong communication is a must too.
You’ll be working with several managers across the business, so you need to be able to give clear updates, raise concerns and coordinate activity without creating unnecessary drama.
What You Might Not Like
This is not an office role.
You’ll be outside and on your feet for most of the day.
It’s operational, practical and busy.
Weather exists too, unfortunately.
So if your ideal role involves being permanently warm, seated and within arm’s reach of the kettle, this probably isn’t it.
There will also be days when priorities change quickly.
A delivery turns up early.
Something needs moving.
Production needs a product immediately.
Transport is waiting.
Someone cannot find what they need.
You’ll need to stay calm, organise the team and get it sorted.
