The Role
This is one of those roles where being good with people matters just as much as being good with the technical detail.
We’re looking for a Sales Engineer who can act as the link between customers, the sales team, suppliers, manufacturers and the workshop - making sure what has been promised commercially can actually be delivered technically.
You’ll be supporting the sales process from a technical perspective, helping shape specifications, answering the questions that need a bit more digging, and making sure proposals are accurate, relevant and genuinely work for the customer.
It’s not a role for someone who wants to sit quietly in the background. You’ll be speaking to people across the business, dealing with external suppliers and manufacturers, attending meetings and events, and becoming one of the go-to people when a technical question needs a proper answer.
The role is 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday
What You'll Be Doing
-
Preparing technical drawings, specifications and weight calculations for body-mounted equipment.
-
Making sure specifications meet chassis manufacturer and installation requirements.
-
Working closely with OEMs, chassis manufacturers, bodybuilders and third-party suppliers.
-
Supporting the sales team with technical information to help secure business and protect margins.
-
Taking ownership of technical and specification-related queries for customer orders.
-
Acting as the link between the sales department and workshop when technical issues need resolving.
-
Helping identify new markets, applications and product solutions.
-
Making sure customer requirements are properly understood and translated into the right technical solution.
-
Supporting bids and proposals so the technical detail is accurate and nothing important gets missed.
-
Building strong working relationships with suppliers of chassis and ancillary equipment.
-
Liaising with colleagues across different Aebi Schmidt locations around specifications and pricing.
-
Keeping an eye on the market, competitor activity and future customer requirements.
-
Attending sales meetings, exhibitions and industry events.
-
Providing ongoing product and technical training to the sales and sales support teams.
What You’ll Need
-
Experience working in a technical, engineering or similarly detailed environment.
-
Ideally degree-level education in Engineering
-
The ability to understand technical information and explain it clearly to people who may not have a technical background.
-
Strong communication skills — you’ll be dealing with customers, suppliers, salespeople, engineers and colleagues across different areas of the business.
-
A good level of IT confidence, including Microsoft Office.
-
Strong organisation and administration skills.
-
The ability to prioritise when several people all need an answer at once.
-
Confidence speaking on the phone, presenting information and contributing in meetings.
-
An understanding of high-value capital equipment or vehicle-related products would be a real advantage.
-
A practical, hands‑on approach to problem solving.
-
The confidence to work independently, manage your own workload and follow things through properly.
-
Common sense. It sounds obvious, but in this role it genuinely matters.
-
A positive, professional attitude and the willingness to go that little bit further when something needs sorting.
Most importantly, we’re looking for somebody who is a completer‑finisher. Someone who notices when a number doesn’t look right, asks the extra question and doesn’t assume somebody else has picked something up.
What You Might Not Like
This probably isn’t the right job if you want a straightforward sales role where you win the order and hand everything over.
There is detail here. Lots of it.
Specifications, drawings, weights, technical requirements, suppliers, different departments and customers will all need to line up — and sometimes you’ll be the person making sure they do.
You’ll also need to be comfortable having several things moving at once. Customers will want answers, sales will need support and technical issues won’t necessarily arrive one at a time in a nice orderly queue.
And although this is a Sales Engineer position, it isn’t about aggressive selling. You’ll add value by knowing the product, understanding the requirement and giving people accurate information they can trust.
If you enjoy getting into the detail, solving problems and being the person people come to because you’ll actually get something sorted, you’ll probably enjoy it.
