About the job: This role within the Genomics & Cytometry Core Technology Unit (GCCTU) involves supporting the delivery of high-quality next-generation sequencing (NGS) services for both internal and external users within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences.

Working under the direction of the GCCTU Manager, the post holder will perform and optimise a range of genomic workflows including RNA sequencing, DNA sequencing, metagenomic profiling, library preparation, sample quality control, and sequencing using Illumina platforms such as Mi Seq, Next Seq 2000 and Nova Seq 6000.

The role also includes operation and maintenance of specialist laboratory equipment and automated robotic systems, ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures, health and safety regulations, and laboratory quality standards.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining laboratory consumables and equipment, updating SOPs and risk assessments, supporting the development of new genomic applications, and accurately reporting and archiving data.

The post holder will provide technical support, consultation, troubleshooting and training to facility users, assist with workshops and outreach activities, and contribute to the promotion and continuous development of the GCCTU through ongoing professional training and collaboration with researchers, students, suppliers and external partners.

About the person: We are seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled candidate with significant hands-on experience in molecular biology and next-generation sequencing within a quality-controlled laboratory environment.

The successful applicant will possess relevant academic or vocational qualifications, strong knowledge of health and safety regulations including: COSHH compliance, and at least four years' experience working with nucleic acids, sample quality control procedures, and NGS library preparation techniques such as RNA sequencing and DNA sequencing.

Experience using Illumina sequencing platforms including Mi Seq, Next Seq and Nova Seq is essential, alongside the ability to validate protocols, follow and develop SOPs, and consistently deliver high-quality work to agreed deadlines.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads, supervise and train staff or students, and communicate effectively with a wide range of users and stakeholders.

Strong IT skills and experience managing laboratory resources are also important.

Desirable attributes include experience working in a service-based laboratory environment, familiarity with automated platforms, LIMS systems and sequencing data analysis.

A flexible and proactive approach, with a willingness to learn new technologies, is essential for success in this role.
