POS Technical Lead – Retail Checkout Modernisation

This is a senior technical role focused on the modernisation of retail checkout platforms, POS automation and the integration of in-store technologies.

You will provide technical leadership across POS architecture, testing, automation, peripherals and platform engineering, working closely with engineering teams, architects, business stakeholders and technology partners.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the technical design and delivery of POS solutions across large-scale retail environments, including supermarkets, convenience stores, self-checkout and forecourt operations.
  • Drive the modernisation of legacy POS platforms towards scalable, containerised and microservices-based solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership across POS testing, automation engineering and retail technology transformation.
  • Work with architects, engineering teams, business stakeholders and vendors to translate requirements into robust technical solutions.
  • Oversee integration of POS peripherals including scanners, printers, scales, payment devices and other in-store hardware.
  • Develop and promote modern test automation and quality engineering practices, including intelligent and AI-enabled testing approaches.
  • Work with POS emulation, hardware abstraction and device virtualisation technologies.
  • Design and implement scalable automation frameworks that improve test coverage and delivery efficiency.
  • Collaborate with platform, infrastructure, security and operations teams to ensure reliable deployments and operational readiness.
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching and mentoring to project teams.
  • Act as a senior technical escalation point for complex POS-related issues.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong experience with

NCR Voyix / NCR Emerald POS platforms.

  • Proven experience in retail POS implementation, modernisation and support .
  • Strong knowledge of

Self-Checkout (SCO) and retail checkout technologies.

  • Hands-on experience with

Store Controller operations, POS peripherals and device management .

  • Strong experience in test automation , particularly

Selenium Grid and Cucumber BDD .

  • Experience with code quality and continuous improvement tools such as

Sonar Qube .

  • Understanding of

POS emulation, hardware abstraction layers and device virtualisation .

  • Experience designing and implementing scalable automation frameworks.
  • Knowledge of

AI-powered quality engineering and intelligent test automation .

  • Strong stakeholder management, communication and technical leadership skills.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams within complex retail technology programmes.
