The Research Platforms Manager will be using specialist expertise in hardware, networking, virtualisation, git workflows, and Linux administration as part of a progressive team, to provide a high‑quality service to Researchers performing world‑class research across the University. The team will be required to deploy, configure, maintain, test, benchmark and document use of a range of modern high‑performance hardware. The Research Platforms Manager role is responsible for assigning and overseeing support for the underlying compute hardware and network infrastructure for the ITS Research services. This covers the 12000+ core, 100+ GPU QM High Performance Compute cluster, various hosted services and virtual machines. Responsibilities

  • Deploy, configure, maintain, test, benchmark and document use of high‑performance hardware.
  • Assign and oversee support for the compute hardware and network infrastructure for ITS Research services, including the 12000+ core, 100+ GPU QM High Performance Compute cluster and hosted services.
  • Manage firmware updates for peripherals and out‑of‑band management.
  • Gather monitoring data, logs and metrics from datacentre hardware, including environmental monitoring.
  • Make changes to live systems using best practice methods and proactive monitoring to ensure good uptime.
  • Make recommendations on hardware purchases and contribute to tender proposals.
  • Line‑manage a junior team member.

Qualifications

  • Background in networking and administering a physical server installation in a datacentre.
  • Demonstrable experience of deploying and administering Linux servers and storage systems.
  • Experience with configuration management using Puppet and Git, and mass deployment tools such as xCAT.
  • Good understanding of network design, switch configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to gather monitoring data, logs and metrics from datacentre hardware.
  • Experience making changes to live systems using best practice methods and proactive monitoring.
  • Knowledge of hardware purchases and tender proposals.
  • Experience in line management.
