Salary: Tutor Salaries are banded based on qualified status and experience. Unqualified – £24,416.64 - £26,248.22. Q1 – £27,734.40 - £32,106.24. Salary will be pro‑ra for part time hours.

Description

The Queen Alexandra Charity Birmingham has a mission to ‘empower young adults with learning difficulties and disabilities to achieve their ambitions and to lead fulfilling lives’. The organisation supports young adults with a diverse range of complexities and abilities and has specialisms in autism and associated complex behaviours and visual impairment. With over 450 staff, the college is accredited with Investors in People Silver and is experiencing growth in service areas, student and client numbers, staffing and income.

The post holder will have teaching responsibility for the Vocational Health and Social Care programme and will support the Health and Social Care programme from Level 1 to Level 3, catering for highly individualised approaches to learning in and out of the classroom within the Vocational team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Motivate students and promote creativity and engagement, embedding them into the learning culture.
  • Collaborate effectively in all aspects of the role and programme with the second part‑time tutor.
  • Introduce and support students to develop a range of skills within Health and Social Care, including Level 1 to Level 3 exam preparation, coursework support, research skills, communication, professional practice and academic writing, whilst encouraging confidence and independence.
  • Use emerging technologies and innovative teaching approaches to facilitate learning and create an inspirational environment that prioritises student needs.
  • Provide a consistent, sequenced curriculum and work as a team using digital devices, assistive technology and interactive resources.
  • Deliver, plan and assess the curriculum using a highly individualised approach in collaboration with the Curriculum Area Manager, ensuring clear intent, implementation and impact.
  • Plan, assess and record individual achievements against Individual Learning Plans, EHCP Plans and, where applicable, RARPA, moderation/awarding body and funding agency criteria.
  • Deliver quality teaching and learning aligned with professional standards and tailored to learner needs, informed by EHCP, QAC outcomes and other assessments.
  • Prepare schemes of work and differentiated lesson plans that clearly outline the purpose and intent of taught sessions.
  • Lead timed, scaffolded and sequenced lessons that enable objectives to be met and progress to be checked.
  • Ensure assessments include appropriate feedback and feed‑forward, with progress recorded and shared with learners.
  • Contribute to curriculum development through preparation, research, liaison with colleagues and external agencies, and resource management.
  • Evaluate curriculum quality and implement findings into improvement plans and self‑assessment reports.
  • Understand the Education Inspection Framework in line with OFSTED inspections.
  • Deliver the PSHE curriculum and pastoral welfare as a group tutor and personal tutor, supporting the learner journey.
  • Familiarise with the technological support available to students with visual impairment and other learning difficulties.
  • Promote the college’s aims and ethos within teaching and corporate life.
  • Participate in staff training and development, developing communication methods for learners with moderate to severe learning difficulties and becoming competent with technological support for visual impairment and MLD.
  • Engage in individual or collaborative research and consultative work agreed by senior management.
  • For Q2/3 posts, undertake wider responsibilities in departmental curriculum contribution or whole college improvement.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Degree qualification at grade 2.2 minimum.
  • Holding a teaching qualification.
  • Holding literacy and numeracy qualifications Level 2 minimum.
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good IT skills, including word processing and spreadsheet packages.
  • Excellent written communication skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Manage workload confidently and adhere to deadlines.
  • Experience of delivering and assessing to high‑needs learners.
  • Excellent organisational skills, conscientious and well‑organised.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and data protection.
  • Previous experience of SEN learners with moderate learning difficulties and ability to provide the associated curriculum, approaches and strategies.
  • Previous experience of sequenced steps, individualised approaches to curriculum and differentiation of materials and concepts and tracking & reviewing achievements.
  • Ability to meet deadlines through planning, prioritising and managing time effectively.
  • Previous experience of learners who have difficulties with emotional regulation.
