The purpose of the role
The purpose of a QAC committee co-optee is to support the work of the Board of Trustees by exercising the responsibilities delegated by the board to the committee through the committee’s Terms of Reference.
The experience needed for the co-optee role
This co-optee role exists to fill gaps in education or care expertise/experience on our Quality Committee, so you will need this background. You will also need the necessary time for the role (four three-hour virtual meetings annually). You will need to be able to scrutinise improvement plans and challenge performance against these, key performance indicators and other metrics. While we will consider all interest, to be effective in this role, we expect that you will need to have attained middle management in education or care.
Main duties
- Share collective responsibility within your committee to carry out the main duties of the role.
- Contribute to the achievement of the responsibilities of the committee.
- Advise the Board of Trustees on draft strategies and other plans, strategic goals, key performance indicators and other metrics.
- Assist the Board of Trustees in ensuring that funds and other assets are protected.
- Monitor the charity’s performance and compliance in the areas of the committee’s responsibility.
- Identify and recognise what the charity does well in these areas.
- Hold relevant executive leaders to account for the performance and quality of those matters within the committee’s remit, challenging the charity to improve further.
How you will fulfil the co-optee role
Each year, you will attend four Quality Committee meetings. These are planned for up to three hours each and take place, usually, from 2.00pm. If you have the right expertise, you may be expected to also attend a special meeting to scrutinise the draft Self-Assessment Report (SAR) and Quality Improvement Plan.

You will benefit from a range of support as part of an approachable, but rigorous and professional, group of people who share our values. We provide induction (some of which is on-site), virtual safeguarding-related training (which is compulsory, unless you obtain an exemption) and further training, if needed. Co-optees are invited to our annual strategy days, when they can contribute to the ‘bigger picture’, if they wish.

We’re already decided to expand our specialist further education college from 450 to 700 places and we’ve confirmed our strategic goal to grow our supported living and community services. We are a friendly organisation, but rigorous in how we govern ourselves.
