Quantum Scholars is expanding its team of Functional Skills Tutors across Somerset in preparation for an increase in EOTAS (Education Otherwise Than at School) and Alternative Provision referrals from September 2026.

We are looking for experienced, patient, and engaging tutors to deliver personalised 1:1 Functional Skills tuition in English and/or Maths to young people who are unable to access mainstream education. This is a rewarding opportunity to help learners build confidence, develop essential life skills, and achieve meaningful educational progress through tailored support.

About the Role

As a Functional Skills Tutor, you will work with primary and secondary-aged pupils (5-16 years) referred through Somerset Council's Alternative Provision arrangements. Every learner has unique strengths, barriers, and learning needs. You'll deliver engaging, individualised lessons that help pupils develop their literacy and numeracy skills while building confidence, motivation, and a positive attitude towards learning.

Many of the young people we support have a range of additional needs, including:

  • SEND
  • Autism (ASC)
  • ADHD
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
  • Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
  • Anxiety and Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
  • Trauma or adverse childhood experiences
  • Medical needs
  • Behavioural challenges

Tuition is delivered on a 1:1 basis, usually in the learner's home or an appropriate community setting, with occasional online sessions where appropriate.

What We’re Looking For

We welcome applications from experienced:

  • Functional Skills Tutors
  • English Tutors
  • Maths Tutors
  • Qualified Teachers
  • Alternative Provision Tutors
  • SEND Tutors
  • Further Education or Adult Education Tutors
  • Learning Support Professionals with experience delivering literacy and numeracy interventions

You should have:

  • Experience teaching or tutoring Functional Skills, English and/or Maths.
  • Experience supporting children and young people with SEND or additional needs.
  • The ability to adapt lessons to suit individual learning styles and abilities.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • A patient, flexible, and encouraging approach.
  • An Enhanced DBS certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is highly desirable due to travel between learners.

What We Offer

Flexible working to fit around your availability. Competitive hourly rates, dependent on experience. Ongoing referrals throughout the academic year. Meaningful 1:1 tuition where you can make a real difference to young people's educational journeys. Dedicated support from an experienced consultant throughout your placements.

Please note that applicants must already have the right to work in the UK. Unfortunately, visa sponsorship is not available for these opportunities.

If you’re passionate about helping children and young people develop the literacy, numeracy, and confidence they need to succeed, and want to make a genuine impact through personalised education, we’d love to hear from you.
