As a Buy To Let Mortgage Underwriter at Quantum Mortgages, you will be responsible for the full assessment and underwriting of mortgage applications, ensuring each case aligns with the company’s credit risk policy and lending criteria. You will manage applications from initial review through to completion, making independent decisions and maintaining high standards of accuracy, compliance, and customer service. This role is central to delivering a seamless experience for brokers and applicants while safeguarding the firm’s risk appetite.
Significant Responsibilities
- To process & underwrite new loans in line with credit policy and underwriting procedures and processes.
- To participate and contribute to ongoing business improvement activity.
- Deliver a first-class proactive customer service through inbound and outbound communication by telephone, email and the case portal to all case stakeholders including introducers, service suppliers, reference providers and occasionally applicants (as appropriate).
- Possess a thorough understanding of the products offered by the Firm, its lending strategy, credit risk policies, and processes.
- To assess borrower creditworthiness and underwrite new mortgage applications from initial receipt through to completion.
- Ensuring a high level of accuracy of data entry and ongoing record keeping.
- Supporting the case management team and underwriting peer group in delivering an excellent, compliant service with prompt and accurate decisioning at each stage of the process.
- Deal with and action post offer queries from the outsourcing servicing partner.
- Supporting the Underwriting Manager/Senior Underwriters as and when required and appropriate.
What we’re looking for Skills and Competencies
- Underwriting Expertise: Deep understanding of mortgage underwriting principles, especially in the Buy-to-Let (BTL) sector, with the ability to assess complex and non-standard cases using sound judgment and clear rationale.
- Risk & Compliance: Strong grasp of credit risk, affordability analysis, financial crime indicators, and regulatory obligations (e.g., AML, FCA), with awareness of industry trends and best practices.
- Analytical & Decision-Making: Skilled in interpreting data beyond policy to evaluate suitability and risk, identifying and mitigating potential issues including fraud and customer vulnerability.
- Communication & Collaboration: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engaging with brokers, solicitors, valuers, and internal teams; collaborative team player who supports shared goals and continuous improvement.
- Pipeline & Workflow Management: Proficient in managing dynamic case pipelines, meeting SLAs, handling post-offer queries, and prioritising workloads effectively.
- Technology Proficiency: Competent in using mortgage processing systems and CRM platforms with accurate data entry and audit-ready record keeping.

Qualifications and Experience
- Proven ability to manage complex cases and multiple work streams to timely completion.
- Experience with specialist lending or intermediary-based mortgage models.
- Proven experience in mortgage underwriting, ideally within the BTL or specialist lending space.
- Demonstrated ability to make independent lending decisions within a defined mandate.
- Strong understanding of credit risk, regulatory requirements, and mortgage operations.
- Experience within the financial services and/or banking/lending industries/sectors.
- Involvement in process improvement or project delivery initiatives.
- Familiarity with automated underwriting systems and digital case management tools.
