About the role

As a buy-to-let Mortgage Underwriter at Quantum Mortgages, you will be responsible for the full assessment and underwriting of mortgage applications, ensuring each case aligns with the company’s credit risk policy and lending criteria. You will manage applications from initial review through to completion, making independent decisions and maintaining high standards of accuracy, compliance, and customer service. This role is central to delivering a seamless experience for brokers and applicants while safeguarding the firm’s risk appetite.

Significant responsibilities include:

  • To process & underwrite new loans in line with credit policy and underwriting procedures and processes.
  • To participate and contribute to ongoing business improvement activity.
  • Deliver a first-class proactive customer service through inbound and outbound communication by telephone, email and the case portal to all case stakeholders including introducers, service suppliers, reference providers and occasionally applicants (as appropriate).
  • Possess a thorough understanding of the products offered by the Firm, its lending strategy, credit risk policies, and processes.
  • To assess borrower creditworthiness and underwrite new mortgage applications from initial receipt through to completion.
  • Ensuring a high level of accuracy of data entry and ongoing record keeping.
  • Supporting the case management team and underwriting peer group in delivering an excellent, compliant service with prompt and accurate decisioning at each stage of the process.
  • Deal with and action post offer queries from the outsourcing servicing partner.
  • Supporting the Underwriting Manager/Senior Underwriters as and when required and appropriate.

Skills and competencies

Knowledge

  • In-depth understanding of mortgage underwriting principles, particularly in the Buy-to-Let (BTL) sector.
  • Strong grasp of credit risk assessment, affordability analysis, and regulatory compliance obligations (e.g., AML, FCA), financial crime indicators.
  • In-depth knowledge of Quantum Mortgages’ lending policies, procedures, and product criteria.
  • In-depth knowledge of internal systems and case management platforms.
  • Awareness of regulatory requirements & developments, and industry best practices and trends in mortgage lending.
  • Ability to make independent lending decisions and justify them with clear rationale.

Skills

  • Advanced analytical ability to assess mortgage applications (including complex & non-standard cases) against policy and criteria applying sound judgment and clear reasoning.
  • Skilled in interpreting information beyond policy to assess suitability and risk.
  • High attention to detail with accurate data entry and audit-ready record keeping.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for engaging with brokers, solicitors, valuers, and internal teams.
  • Ability to manage a pipeline of cases efficiently while meeting SLAs and compliance standards.
  • Skilled in identifying and escalating complex or high-risk cases.
  • Skilled in identifying and mitigating potential risks, including fraud and customer vulnerability.
  • Competence in handling post-offer queries and liaising with servicing partners.
  • Proficient in using mortgage processing systems and CRM platforms.
  • Capable of managing a dynamic case pipeline and prioritising workloads effectively, and supporting team members in doing the same.

Qualifications and experience

  • Proven ability to manage complex cases and multiple workstreams.
  • Experience with specialist lending or intermediary‑based mortgage models.
  • Proven experience in mortgage underwriting, ideally within the BTL or specialist lending space.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent lending decisions within a defined mandate.
  • Strong understanding of credit risk, regulatory requirements, and mortgage operations.
  • Experience within the financial services and/or banking/lending industries/sectors.
  • Involvement in process improvement or project delivery initiatives.
  • Familiarity with automated underwriting systems and digital case management tools.
