Pursue exciting Quantum Technology research as part of a multi-disciplinary group at the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering, while following specialist courses and practical training to prepare you for a career in Quantum Technology science, engineering and industry.
As part of the UKRI’s TechExpert pilot, we offer annual tax-free stipends of £31,000 to students eligible for home fee status. Based at the University of Southampton, our Quantum Technology research links our Schools of Physics & Astronomy, Chemistry, Electronics & Computer Science, Engineering, and our Optoelectronics Research Centre, and spans from fundamental principles to applications, processes to devices, and components to systems.
Specially created Quantum Technology modules including design, modelling, simulation and fabrication, systems engineering, communication skills and business awareness, together with an expert programme of seminars, Challenge Weeks and a 12-week placement with one of our industry partners, will equip you with scientific, technical and commercial knowledge and skills to support your career ambitions in the Quantum Technology sector.
Our research projects and training are supported by over 50 companies across the Quantum Technology sector, our state-of-the-art Nanofabrication Centre, and other University facilities.

We welcome – and reserve funded places for – students from under-represented backgrounds, or not following directly from an undergraduate degree. We also welcome students re-skilling, returning after a career break, or interested in part-time study. If you work in the Quantum Technology sector, much of your research may be undertaken within the company.
Unsure about doctoral research, or just want to know more? We hold Open Days for students to visit, meet researchers and ask questions, and we can arrange individual visits too. We also offer Orientation Days to experience life in a research group and explore what it is to study for a PhD.
What does the funding cover?
- A tax-free annual stipend at the UKRI rate (currently approx. £21,000), plus an additional £10,000 per year if you’re eligible for home fee status.
- Full UK tuition fees
- A substantial Research Training and Support Grant to fund PhD-related conferences, research visits and training.
Open to UK and international candidates with:
- A relevant Honours or Master’s degree at 2:1/Merit level or above, or equivalent vocational expertise.
- Fluency in English to IELTS 6.5/TOEFL 92
Places may be filled well before our application deadline of 31 July 2026. International candidates should apply by 31 March to allow for ATAS and visa processes.
