Software Engineering Internship (Research Engineering)

G-Research is a leading quantitative research and technology firm, with offices in London and Dallas.

This role is based in our new Soho Place office – opened in 2023 – in the heart of Central London and home to our Research Lab.

The Role

  • Duration: 31st March 2025 or 30th June 2025 to 19th September 2025.
  • Place: Central London.
  • 12 or 24‑week summer internship between penultimate and final year of study, finishing in September.
  • Internship will develop knowledge of working with legacy systems that are modernised.
  • Opportunity to build world‑class software and deliver improvements to production code.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enhance and support existing trade technology platform and associated toolset.
  • Design and implement high‑quality code to work with large data sets.
  • Research raw data, work with quant teams to ensure data quality and value.
  • Design database and query performance, and optimise performance enhancements where possible.
  • Maintain and enhance existing infrastructure and data‑processing tools responsible for handling many significant data feeds.
  • Induction and Training

Successful candidates receive an introduction to technology in finance, and extensive introductions to internal operations.

Will be paired with an experienced engineer mentor. Access to training courses and online learning licences, plus soft‑skill training.

Qualifications

  • Competent and practical software engineers with experience in object‑oriented programming languages such as C#, Java or C++.
  • Excellent academics (studying for a 2:1 or above in Computer Science or Computer Science with Mathematics).
  • Interest in both software technology and underlying hardware, appreciation of good software architecture, core programming techniques, and data structures.
  • Interest in quantitative finance and understanding of engineering role within that space.
  • Ability to prioritise, plan, and deliver to support the wider team and keep work on track.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and proactively learn new technologies.
  • Balanced judgement, evaluating different approaches to identify appropriate solutions.
  • Adaptable communication style tailored to the audience, to convey compelling messages.
  • Understand needs and challenges of others and present mutually beneficial solutions.
  • Collaborative approach and desire to build effective relationships across the business.
