Description
We are seeking a Senior Electro-Optic Development Engineer to join our Development Engineering team at our St Asaph site. This role is critical to supporting New Product Introduction (NPI), sustaining production, and driving continuous improvement across all aspects of engineering.
The Opportunity
Development Engineering is a core discipline that supports Qioptiq’s ability to develop and deliver new (& existing) products in a cost effective and timely manner.
The primary role of Development Engineering is to identify and mitigate the technical risks in development projects. This is a proactive role that takes the lead in developing awareness of technology trends, opportunities, and implementation where appropriate. This is a challenging position that will push an individual, providing opportunity for personal development and progression.
Key Responsibilities
- Risk reduction - allows proper identification and mitigation of technical risks through design studies and experimental work.
- Fundamental support to technology development - convert the concepts into reality through controlled and structured development tasks.
- Leading and supporting process definition and improvement and ensuring tie‑in between design and manufacturing.
- Creating positive working relationships with Design and Manufacturing Engineers to ensure the transfer of development projects into production.
- Liaising with customer and supplier contacts on a technical level to achieve programme specifications.
- Generate and maintain technical documentation, engineering reports, and compliance evidence.
- Ensure all development activities comply with company procedures, Health & Safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Support and mentor junior engineers and technicians within the function.
Essential Skills & Experience
- An education to at least first degree level, preferably in Physics / Mechanical or Optical Engineering.
- A technical background with strong analytical skills and practical ability.
- Strong understanding of optical principles (imaging, alignment, aberrations, tolerancing).
- Strong attention to detail and good inter‑personal skills.
- Confidently liaise with customers and suppliers on product specifications / performance matters.
- Success in establishing effective working relationships at all levels.
- Drive and proven ability to work under own initiative.
- Experience troubleshooting complex optical systems and structured problem‑solving skills.
