The Role
As a Technical Manager, you will act as the subject matter expert for Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) across a multitude of QinetiQ sites. Your role will be key to ensuring the safety of the site, the workforce and contribute to successful outcomes of trials and programmes critical to the UK’s National Security.
Day‑to‑day, you’ll lead a team that provides expert technical oversight of permit‑to‑work systems, risk assessments, and high‑risk work controls, ensuring statutory compliance and safeguarding people, assets, and operations employed within Estates Delivery for the following hazardous areas: HV Electrical systems, LV Electrical systems, HAZ Electrical systems, Mechanical systems, Confined Spaces, Working at Height, Petroleum Installations, and Gas Installations.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and managing the organisation’s SSoW framework
- Owning and governing the Permit‑to‑Work (PTW) process, including hot work, electrical HV/LV, Fuel Installations, Confined Space, Working at Height and other high risk activities
- Ensuring compliance with statutory regulations and organisational policies
- Supporting and advising Authorised Persons and technical specialists in the safe planning and execution of works
- Developing and maintaining competency frameworks for APs, CPs, supervisors, and operatives
- Supporting delivery of SSoW and PTW training programmes
Essential experience of the Technical Manager:
- Strong understanding of Safe Systems of Work, PTW processes, isolations and high risk work controls
- Knowledge of engineering systems: electrical, mechanical, pressure systems
- Experience in operational estates, FM, construction, defence, or industrial environments
- In depth knowledge of relevant legislation, including:
- Health and Safety at Work Act
- Management of H&S at Work Regulations
- CDM Regulations
- Electricity at Work Regulations
- Fuel Safety Management
- Confined Space Regulations
- PUWER / LOLER
- COSHH
Essential qualifications for the Technical Manager:
- HNC/HND or Degree in an engineering discipline (mechanical, electrical, building services, etc.)
- Formal Authorised Person (AP) training in relevant disciplines (Electrical, Confined Space, Mechanical, etc.)
- Hold a full current UK driving licence
This role is 37 hours per week and can be based at our Amesbury, Farnborough or Bristol site. Hybrid working patterns are available. Travel to other QinetiQ and customer sites will be expected.
