The Role: As a Static Detonation Electromechanical Engineer you will be responsible for designing, maintaining, troubleshooting and optimising electromechanical systems used in the safe processing and disposal of munitions and explosives in our Static Detonation Chamber. Day-to-day, you’ll ensure the reliability, safety and efficiency of the SDC facility by integrating mechanical and electrical engineering principles into explosive ordnance demilitarization operations.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, developing and optimising electromechanical systems for the handling, processing and disposal of ordnance and munitions in the SDC
  • Ensuring the proper integration of mechanical components, electrical systems and automation technologies to enhance system performance
  • The diagnosis and repairing of electromechanical failures in the SDC and related equipment ensuring minimal downtime
  • Working closely with maintenance teams to perform preventive and predictive maintenance on motors, actuators, conveyors and robotic handling systems
  • Ensuring all engineering and maintenance activities comply with HSE, DS and MOD regulations, participating in hazard analysis and risk assessments for system modifications and new equipment installations
  • Maintaining detailed maintenance logs and technical documentation for compliance purposes

Essential experience of the Static Detonation Electromechanical Engineer:

  • Expertise in electromechanical systems, automation and control systems
  • A strong understanding of explosion-proof design principles, safety interlocks and hazardous area classification
  • Hands-on experience with PLCs, SCADA systems, robotics and automated handling equipment
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical troubleshooting techniques in high-risk environments
  • Proficiency in engineering design software (AutoCAD, Solidworks or similar)
  • The ability to work in hazardous environments and wear full protective gear

Essential qualifications for the Static Detonation Electromechanical Engineer:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or relevant technical experience

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Shoeburyness site. This role is a fully on-site role. QinetiQ Shoeburyness is a significant test and evaluation facility specialising in defence and security technologies. The site is focused on Environmental Testing including the evaluation of various ordnance, explosives and related systems. Implementing measures to ensure that testing activities comply with environmental regulations and minimise ecological impact.
