The Role

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be leading the delivery of mechanical design solutions and taking ownership of delivery on complex tasks, requiring high integrity engineering and managing complex, unusual tasks involving significant challenges. Day-to-day, you’ll support numerous aircraft modifications and ship designs. Each team will have unique engineering focuses and will explore and test the problem space thoroughly, guiding others in generating their own hardware solutions and be prepared to lead and co-ordinate the reviews and testing of these ideas at design reviews.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Guiding others and corral SME's at design reviews and hold pre-reviews
  • Responsible for bringing together and chairing engineering reviews
  • Directly contributes to continuous improvement
  • Providing advice or presentation to customers, stakeholders and peers
  • Managing the quality assurance and authoring processes

Essential experience of the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer:

  • Experience designing technical hardware solutions, ideally from a regulated industry requiring complex problem solving, precision tolerances or specific domain knowledge
  • Significant experience creating technical drawings from 3D models, working with suppliers, manufacturers, customers, and subject matter experts
  • Function without supervision on a day-to-day basis and be capable of providing guidance and advice to less experienced practitioners
  • Deep understanding of budgets, group behaviour, patterns of behaviour and using this to deliver to time quality, cost
  • Hazard identification, safety cases and safety management systems
  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering fundamentals

Essential qualifications for the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer:

  • HNC/HND/Degree in Aeronautical, Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or Product Design

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Boscombe Down site with a minimum average site attendance of four days per week. Compressed hours are available for a nine day fortnight.

Boscombe Down MOD is a unique operational site featuring the longest military runway in the UK. Primarily focusing on providing testing, evaluation and support services for aviation and aerospace systems. Renowned for its extensive flight testing capabilities the site plays a vital role in the UK’s aviation defence contributing to the development, testing and airworthiness of military aircraft enhancing operational readiness and effectiveness.

Eligibility:

All applicants for this role must be eligible for SC clearance, as a minimum. Subject to national security vetting; holders of appropriate level can transfer existing clearance.
