Role Purpose
The Software Engineering discipline at QinetiQ supports a broad range of capabilities, from designing submarines to delivering cyber‑security services. Engineers work across air, land, maritime and space domains, using the latest technologies to develop innovative software solutions that meet demanding customer requirements. We cultivate a multidisciplinary team of professional developers, architects and leaders, and offer a supportive environment for apprentices to grow and shape tomorrow’s solutions.
Key Accountabilities
- You will perform a wide variety of software tasks to support project delivery.
- Working with external clients and internal teams, you will help design, implement, and deliver new features while maintaining existing software.
- One‑fifth of your working week will be dedicated to University commitments as you pursue a degree.
- Contribute to high‑profile science and technology programmes in the UK and overseas.
- Develop training & simulation systems for armed forces.
- Support test and evaluation activities for novel equipment trials and military exercises.
- Deliver systems that monitor and protect critical national infrastructure.
- Build autonomous air, land and maritime vehicles for military and humanitarian use.
- Update integrated naval‑architecture design and analysis tools.
Additional Requirements
- Strong interest in or experience within Software Engineering.
- Knowledge of at least one object‑oriented programming language.
- Any work experience within computing or engineering is beneficial.
- Extra‑curricular or hobby activities in Software Engineering or Computer Science are beneficial.
- Experience in Agile, Cloud, DevOps or embedded software is beneficial.
Training Provider
Solent University – Digital and Technology Solutions: Software Engineer BSc (Hons) Degree Apprenticeship. Lectures and on‑campus days occur during the working week and require travel to Southampton.
Qualifications
Minimum of 104‑112 points at A‑Level (Grades BBC) or equivalent such as BTEC DMM, including Maths and a Science subject. At least a Grade 5 (C) in Maths, IT, Science, English and one other subject at GCSE or equivalent.
