The RoleThe Laser & Optical Physics teams at QinetiQ Farnborough and Malvern are looking to add an enthusiastic and talented individual to their team of subject matter experts. Through your experience of optical systems you will be actively involved in delivering work packages relating to novel optical systems. Training in the exciting and growing technology of High energy Laser systems will be provided.Responsibilities would includePlanning and technical leadership of projects as appropriatePlanning, development, and deployment of optical systemsProviding input to larger projects as part of a team of subject matter expertsUndertaking technical tasks relating to HEL development, test and evaluationEngaging with relevant stakeholders from a variety of backgroundsSupport of and input to the QinetiQ technical strategyDeployment to trial sites across the UKRequirements & Essential ExperiencePhD or equivalent time in industry in a relevant fieldA robust understanding of laser and optical physicsA theoretical and practical knowledge of optical designUnderstanding of issues affecting choice and design of optical materials and coatingsExperience working with laboratory test and measurement equipment/instrumentationAwareness of laser safety practices and standardsExperience engaging with stakeholders to capture requirementsExperience in technical project planning and deliveryAwareness of Systems engineering practicesExperience working within a team and great interpersonal communication skillsExperience in the use and development of Convolutional Neural NetworksExperience in the use and development of beam combination techniquesUseful ExperiencePlanning and running trials activitiesLaser safety assessmentLaser optics at kW level, preferably including fibre lasers, beam quality management and opto/thermomechanical effectsData analysis and machine control in Matlab and/or Labview or other packagesProfessional standard optical design tools such as Zemax, and related 3D engineering or modelling packages.Through-life EngineeringWorking on both MOD and commercial projects
