The Role:
As an Optical Engineer, you’ll have a role that is out of the ordinary. Through your experience of fibre optical systems, you will be actively involved in delivering work packages relating to novel laser and optical systems. Training in the exciting and growing technology of High-energy Laser systems will be provided.
Day-to-day, you’ll be planning, developing, and deploying optical systems.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Undertaking technical tasks relating to High-energy Laser development, and test & evaluation
- Engaging with stakeholders
- Travelling to trial sites across the UK
- Providing input into large projects as part of a team of subject matter experts
- Leading technical projects
Essential experience of the Optical Engineer:
- In-depth knowledge of optical fibres and fibre components
- Practical experience designing, developing, and assembling optical fibre systems
- Robust understanding of laser and optical physics
- Experience of working with laboratory test and measurement equipment/instrumentation
- Awareness of laser safety practices
Essential qualifications for the Optical Engineer:
- PhD or equivalent experience in industry in a relevant field

This role is 37 hours per week based at Farnborough. Hybrid working patterns available.
At our Farnborough site, exciting work takes place at our state-of-the-art facility, with high-energy laser technologies, our 5m pressurised wind tunnel which has a simulation capability that is unique in the UK, and our large research and development projects.
