QinetiQ Portsmouth, England, United Kingdom. The role is based in Portsmouth with potential travel to other UK sites and overseas, and involves delivering synthetic environments for Maritime Battlestaff (MBS) training and assurance exercises.
QinetiQ Training & Simulation Ltd (QTSL) develops software solutions across technologies including AI, AR/VR, and mathematical modelling to support MOD requirements and research for next‑gen simulation systems.
The role is to support the delivery of Maritime Battlestaff (MBS) training and assurance exercises at the Portsmouth Naval Base and other locations, using the latest synthetic environments to create an immersive exercise environment. It also interfaces with Tier 3/4 exercise participants as required.
Responsibilities
- Lead the configuration, setup, testing and deployment of the synthetic environment to support exercise delivery.
- Provide regular progress reports to project management and ensure milestones are delivered on time.
- Manage day‑to‑day technical tasks and resources; ensure timely and safe completion of all simulation activities, within cost and quality standards for the contract duration.
- Create the synthetic environment for each exercise and maintain it during delivery.
- Attend and support project meetings and working groups (incl. IPC, MPC, FPC).
- Plan and deliver exercise scenarios and databases in the synthetic environment.
- Develop training materials to support LOCON training on CAX tools use and exploitation.
- Collaborate with the CIS manager to design and deliver suitable CIS infrastructure.
- Engage with CAX tool providers on upgrades and continual improvement feedback.
- Plan and implement maintenance, testing and acceptance activities as part of continual improvement, in partnership with the CIS manager to maximise availability.
- During exercise delivery, lead the delivery team to train users, manage the synthetic environment, update scenarios/databases, and support AAR activities.
The Candidate
This role is delivery‑focused and suits someone who enjoys making things happen. You will work closely with exercise delivery and technical teams to provide a seamless experience for the training audience. Based in Portsmouth with regular visits to QTSL HQ in Farnborough and other UK sites; occasional overseas travel may be required.
Experience and Skills
- Experience across a range of synthetic environments including configuration, deployment, testing and user training.
- Understanding of terrain generation, tools and data sources.
- Hardware setup and configuration.
- Understanding of network configuration and laydown.
- Military knowledge and understanding.
- Task planning and prioritisation; excellent organisational skills with the ability to multi‑task.
- Adaptability, problem solving and rapid solution provision.
- Clear, diplomatic written and verbal communication; effective reporting up the chain of command.
- MS Office Suite proficiency.
