The Role
As an Associate Naval Architect, the primary focus of your role will be the delivery of hydrodynamic testing and design consultancy services to the UK Ministry of Defence and commercial customers. Areas of focus will be hull model design and manufacture, propeller design and manufacture, resistance and propulsion experiments, and cavitation experiments. As part of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering group, there will be opportunities to be involved in ship and submarine stability, seakeeping, manoeuvring and control.
Day-to-day, you’ll have a key role in planning and leading the technical delivery of programmes of work, such as hydrodynamic simulations/experiments of ships and submarines in support of design and operation.
Your responsibilities
- Plan and lead the technical delivery of programmes of work, such as hydrodynamic simulations/experiments of ships and submarines in support of design and operation
- Breakdown complex tasks and then execute the planned schedule of work.
- Work with project managers to track progress, assign tasks and supervise the technical delivery team
- Participate in business development activities through engagement with customers and provision of technical delivery plans and resource requirements to the bidding team
- Act as a peer or independent reviewer for other projects or programmes of work, where suitable
- Deliver technical presentations in external forums, such as conferences and customer meetings
Essential experience of the Associate Naval Architect:
- You will need an excellent understanding of engineering, equivalent to someone who has completed a BEng/MEng in Naval Architecture or Mechanical Engineering
- Understanding of marine hydrodynamics, or aerodynamics
- Knowledge of data analysis, including experience of programming (e.g. Matlab) is desirable
- Knowledge of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) is desirable
- Experience with Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry desirable (Stereo PIV)
