The Role: As a Safety Engineer, you will be supporting the Allocated Design Team and surrounding SMEs where the Safety Engineer’s main role will be aiding in the development and delivery of the Safety Case that supports the Design Certification or Safety of Flight declaration (Permit to Fly).

Day-to-day, you’ll have specific safety activities including supporting project bid activities, leading hazard identification activities, and collating safety evidence to form safety artefacts for a wide range of Aircraft Modification, commercial equipment and test instrumentation integration (for aviation and other applications), and ground support equipment tasks. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Technically lead (with support) project safety activities including hazard identification, risk analysis and management.
  • Prepare safety and risk management documentation required to support certification, or safety of flight (Permit to Fly (PtF)) activities.
  • Support generation of the safety and risk management philosophy to meet customer, technical, environmental, operational, safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintenance of a hazards and controls register.
  • Supporting Part 21J Design, Part 21G Production, Part 145’s Maintenance and aircraft operators (internal to QinetiQ and customer/supplier organisations) with interfacing Safety Management Systems (SMS).
  • Review and test adequacy of evidence supplied to support Safety Assessments, including supplier and customer generated evidence.

Essential experience of the Safety Engineer:

  • Candidate will have specialist safety experience, ideally including the support and generation of safety arguments supporting aviation designs or products.
  • Technical report writing, specifically for the generation of Safety Case reporting and advice.
  • Generation and maintenance of project Hazard Logs.
  • Has a knowledge and understanding of Regulatory and Governance of the design process.
  • Able to generate compliance arguments and documentation which meet the requirements of the project regulatory framework (CAA, MAA, HSE).

Essential qualifications for the Safety Engineer:

  • Masters’ Degree in Safety or Aviation, or related discipline/equivalent (HNC/HND/level of experience to deem an equivalent level of knowledge).
  • Engineering fundamentals - Formal training/experience in Engineering subjects such as materials, stress awareness, mechanism designs, Design principles, electrical awareness.

This role is 37 hours per week based at MoD Boscombe Down. Flexibility in start times, end times and flexible working will be considered in accordance with QinetiQ corporate policy.

Boscombe Down MOD Boscombe Down is a unique operational site featuring the longest military runway in the UK. Primarily focusing on providing testing, evaluation and support services for aviation and aerospace systems.
