We were recently crowned Employer of the Year at the British Ex-Forces in Business Awards 2023. We have been listed as one of the ‘100 Best Large Companies to Work For’ in the UK and Midlands by Best Companies several times as well as achieving ‘Best Companies 3 Star Accreditation’ and a rating of ‘world-class’ for our employee engagement on a number of occasions. We are also proud to have been honoured with two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in Innovation, for our next-generation GECO military mission planning system. As part of a unique and specialist defence company, our friendly team consists of experienced and highly capable individuals, working together with a mature ‘can do’ work ethic. Our central business functions are located in an easily accessible, bright and modern head office to the west of Lincoln, alongside our mission systems team, while the majority of our operational specialists are embedded alongside our Defence customers.

THE ROLE

Mission Training Devices is looking for talented software developers to join its expanding talent in preparation for exciting upcoming opportunities. The role will be developing software for synthetic training devices, both stand‑alone software applications and Mixed‑Reality integrations. As such, we are looking for individuals with experience in the following areas (in order of preference):

  • Building modules and plugins for VBS4 and/or BlueIG (OneArc products) using their SDKs.
  • Building modules and plugins for other simulators.
  • Programming in C, C++ or C#.
  • Scripting in Python.
  • Building applications with .NET MAUI.
  • Interest and experience with unmanned systems.

Experience with collaborative development tools (specifically Azure DevOps and Git) is essential, with experience of administering such platforms considered beneficial. MTD develop software following the SCRUM development methodology, so experience of, or qualifications in SCRUM is advantageous. We are open to applications from across the UK, however, due to the nature of the initial project, semi‑frequent travel can be expected to MoD Boscombe Down for face‑to‑face meetings and work with hardware. While the exact frequency of travel is dependent on operational pressures, twice‑monthly visits are to be expected with at least one overnight stay locally.

THE PERSON

MTD is looking for an enthusiastic individual striving for self‑improvement, expansion of understanding and a strong desire to work on cutting‑edge concepts and new products. A base understanding of, or willingness to learn the core principles of Physics and spatial Mathematics (geometry, vectors, matrices etc) will be strongly beneficial. MTD team members take pride in their problem‑solving ability and are keen to expand this further. We are looking for experienced professionals who can seamlessly integrate into a growing team. The ability to work with other, like‑minded, professionals is essential but there will be instances where the successful candidate will need to work on smaller projects alone. MTD prides itself on team spirit and the ability to communicate effectively will be essential. This includes both verbal and written skills from participating in regular departmental Teams meetings to code‑reviews and face‑to‑face discussions. A high level of professionalism is expected, and the successful candidate will need to participate in team and company activities both inside and outside of the department. MTD are embarking on several exciting projects that require our talent to expand and we are looking for like‑minded individuals to become part of our dynamic team. Due to the nature of elements of the role, the successful applicant must be a UK National and may be required to successfully complete National Security Vetting which may require criminal record, security service and credit reference checks; qualification will also normally require a minimum UK residency of at least 5 years.

  • 30 days paid holiday plus 8 days bank holidays per year.
  • Uncapped paid leave scheme (upon successful completion of probation period).
