The System Development team at QIAGEN Manchester plays an important role in the development of in vitro diagnostic (IVD) products used in clinical laboratories across the world. Our systems are focused on nucleic acid extraction and analysis by qPCR, dPCR and NGS. The work involves the development of new systems as well as support of existing technologies post-launch through life‑cycle management processes. We are looking for a student intern to work alongside a team of scientists. Working within the System Development team, the role will be primarily lab‑based, performing functional tests of instrumentation, plastics, software and chemistry. The successful candidate will also develop an understanding of ISO 13485 compliant development and will gain valuable insights into IVD system development and troubleshooting. This role is intended for a current MSc student (starting their course in Autumn 2026), on a part‑time basis, who wishes to supplement their studies with real‑world experience of IVD development.
Your tasks:
- Conduct laboratory studies in accordance with QIAGEN guidelines and processes
- Work with members of the System Development team to draft and review study worksheets/protocols
- Support with compliance and housekeeping tasks, such as worksheet reviews and laboratory cleaning/maintenance execution
Your profile:
- BSc degree‑level qualification in a Life Science subject
- Enrolled on an MSc course with availability to work at least 15 hours per week (flexible around studies where required)
- Hands‑on experience in basic laboratory techniques: dilutions, DNA/RNA quantification, use of pipettes
- Eager to learn and develop new skills and gain understanding of new technologies
- Flexible and adaptable to changing project priorities
- Desirable: Comfortable analysing output files and log files
- Desirable: Hands‑on experience with laboratory devices/instrumentation and/or automation
