London - Hybrid - Asset Management

A specialist quant and analytics team at a UK asset manager is hiring a Python developer to build the tools its investment desks rely on. You'll sit inside the front office, working directly with portfolio managers, not behind a layer of business analysts, and the analytics and dashboards you build will be used daily by the people making capital allocation decisions across equities, rates, credit, and private markets. This is a role for someone who takes engineering craft seriously and wants to understand the investment problems behind the code, not just the tickets in front of them.

What you'll do:

  • Build and maintain production-grade Python analytics and dashboards used daily by investment teams
  • Work directly with portfolio managers to turn investment questions into scalable technical solutions
  • Maintain and evolve a substantial existing Python codebase
  • Query commercial, production-grade databases (SQL Server, Postgres) to power analytics delivery
  • Apply strong engineering practices throughout: Git, testing, code review, and CI/CD

What we're looking for:

  • A strong Python developer who writes production-quality code - non-negotiable, and assessed at interview
  • Solid SQL, including querying commercial, production-grade databases - not just CSV, JSON, or API data
  • Comfort with Git, CI/CD, and software development best practices such as testing and code review
  • A project you've delivered working directly with an investment desk - with portfolio managers or analysts, not only through BAs.
  • A pure software engineering background is fine; performance or risk backgrounds are welcome if you've implemented the calculation logic yourself, not just moved data between systems
  • Financial product knowledge at roughly CFA Level 1 depth: the basics of asset pricing, market data, and economics. Working knowledge of rates, credit, or equities is essential; alternatives are a plus. You don't need the CFA itself, though progress towards it is welcome

What sets the strongest candidates apart:

  • The best applicants have been embedded in or alongside the investment process itself - you understand why a portfolio manager is asking a question, not just how to answer it technically.
  • Experience supporting commercial teams such as marketing or fund sales won't be a substitute.
  • At interview, we'll assess both your Python and SQL, and ask you to talk through a project where you worked directly with the front office.
