Role responsibilities
Main Duties
- Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge students
- Establish a safe and stimulating environment for students, rooted in mutual respect
- Set goals that stretch and challenge students of all backgrounds, abilities and dispositions
- Demonstrate consistently the positive attitudes, values and behaviour which are expected of students
Promote good progress and outcomes by students
- Be accountable for students\’ attainment, progress and outcomes
- Be aware of students\’ capabilities and prior knowledge, and plan teaching accordingly
- Guide students to reflect on progress and emerging needs
- Demonstrate knowledge of how students learn and its impact on teaching
- Encourage students to take responsibility for their own work and study
Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
- Have secure knowledge across the subject and curriculum area; foster interest and address misunderstandings
- Demonstrate understanding of developments in the subject and promote scholarship
- Promote high standards of literacy, articulacy and standard English
Plan and teach well – structured lessons
- Impart knowledge and develop understanding through effective use of lesson time
- Promote a love of learning and intellectual curiosity
- Set homework and plan other activities to consolidate knowledge
- Reflect on lesson effectiveness and approaches to teaching
- Contribute to an engaging curriculum within the subject area
Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all students
- Differentiate appropriately; enable effective learning
- Understand factors that can inhibit learning and how to overcome them
- Adapt teaching for different developmental stages and needs
- Address needs of all students, including SEND, EAL, and high ability
Make accurate and productive use of assessment
- Assess relevant subject and curriculum areas, including statutory requirements
- Use formative and summative assessment to secure progress
- Use data to monitor progress, set targets, plan lessons
- Provide regular feedback and encourage student response
- Monitor and support progress as a form tutor
Manage behaviour effectively
- Establish clear behaviour rules and routines
- Maintain high expectations of behaviour; use a range of strategies consistently
- Manage classes to engage and motivate students
- Maintain good relationships and exercise appropriate authority
Fulfil wider professional responsibilities
- Contribute to the wider life and ethos of the school
- Develop professional relationships and deploy support staff effectively
- Engage in professional development and Performance Management
- Communicate with parents regarding achievements and well-being
- Follow Quality Assurance procedures; maintain records and registers
- Support with form tutor duties and school events; comply with Health and Safety policy
