Risk & Compliance Manager

London

Hybrid working

Have you been leading Risk & Compliance within a smaller law firm and reached the point where you’re ready for greater scale, complexity and opportunity? I’m working with a leading regional law firm looking to add an experienced Risk & Compliance Manager to its established team. Continued growth, alongside longer-term planning within the team, has created an opportunity for a senior risk professional to join.

This is a generalist role with a particular focus on claims, complaints and professional indemnity matters, alongside conflicts, regulatory advice and training.

You’ll work closely with the Head of Risk, fellow managers and partners across the firm. Whilst you’ll have experienced colleagues around you, they need someone who can take ownership, exercise independent judgement and confidently make decisions on complex and sensitive matters.

The role?

  • Investigating and managing client complaints, drafting responses and supporting matters escalated to the Legal Ombudsman or SRA.
  • Managing actual and potential claims against the firm, reviewing files and liaising with fee earners, insurers and external advisers.
  • Advising on conflicts of interest, confidentiality, ethics and professional conduct.
  • Providing practical guidance on the SRA Standards and Regulations, Accounts Rules and wider regulatory obligations.
  • Identifying themes arising from claims and complaints, using these to improve procedures and reduce future risk.
  • Developing policies and guidance, delivering induction and ongoing risk training, and supporting file reviews and audits.
  • Assisting with professional indemnity insurance renewals and supervising a Risk & Compliance Assistant.

About you?

  • Substantial experience in a law firm Risk & Compliance function, potentially as Head of Compliance or the senior compliance lead within a smaller firm.
  • Direct experience managing claims, complaints and professional indemnity matters.
  • Detailed knowledge of SRA requirements and the Legal Ombudsman framework.
  • Confident taking responsibility for matters, weighing up risks and reaching sound, commercially practical decisions.
  • Comfortable advising and, where necessary, challenging partners and senior stakeholders.
  • Able to manage a varied workload independently, recognising when a matter requires escalation.

Applications are welcome from qualified lawyers and experienced law firm risk and compliance managers.

What’s in it for you?

  • A visible role within a growing firm, working closely with partners and senior leadership.
  • An established Risk & Compliance team to share ideas and expertise with.
  • Ownership of complex claims, complaints and professional risk matters.
  • The opportunity to shape policies, improve processes and deliver firmwide training.
  • Mentoring and ongoing support to develop your career.
  • Hybrid working and a strong emphasis on work-life balance.
  • Private healthcare and enhanced family leave.
  • 25 days’ holiday, your birthday off and the option to buy more.
  • Life assurance, pension and interest-free season ticket loans.
