An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Costs Draftsman with strong Legal Aid experience to join a well-established and growing legal practice specialising in publicly funded work. This role is ideally suited to someone with a solid background handling Legal Aid Agency billing, publicly funded claims, and detailed knowledge of LAA Costs Assessment Guidance. The successful candidate will be confident managing the full billing process independently and thrive in a fully remote working environment.
The Role
- Preparing and submitting final claims for publicly funded matters
- Completing Outcome submissions to the Legal Aid Agency
- Uploading supporting documentation and managing claim submissions
- Reviewing Assessment Notifications and preparing Appeals where appropriate
- Drafting electronic bills
- Providing technical costs guidance to fee earners
- Supporting junior team members with post-assessment work
- Maintaining accurate time costing procedures
- Ensuring compliance with internal file management and billing processes
- Assisting with ongoing costs management and training initiatives
Experience using Costsmaster software would be highly advantageous.
Essential Experience
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience drafting publicly funded bills
- Strong working knowledge of Legal Aid Agency procedures and LAA Costs Assessment Guidance
- Proven experience handling Legal Aid submissions from start to finish
- Experience preparing appeals against reductions and assessment outcomes
- The ability to independently manage your own caseload
- Previous experience within a legal costs or litigation environment
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
- Strong IT and case management system experience
- A professional, proactive, and team-focused approach
Supervisory experience would be beneficial but is not essential.
