There are lawyers who like transactions. And then there are lawyers who look at a transaction and immediately start wondering what the tax consequences are. I’m looking to speak with solicitors in Newcastle who have developed an interest in corporate tax and want to build a genuine specialist career around it. The opportunity is broader than the title might initially suggest. You could be advising on the tax aspects of buying or selling a business. A corporate restructuring. A property transaction. VAT. SDLT. Corporation tax. Capital gains tax. Employee share schemes. The sort of work where one technical point can have a very significant impact on how the whole deal is structured. And that is what makes corporate tax interesting. You are not sitting at the edge of the transaction waiting for somebody to send you a question. You are often helping shape the answer. Working alongside corporate, real estate and other commercial teams. Understanding what the client is actually trying to achieve. Spotting the tax issue before it becomes an expensive problem. And finding a solution that works commercially as well as technically. This particular opportunity also has a strong development angle. You would be working directly with experienced tax Partners in a team that genuinely invests in technical knowledge and progression. There is scope to build towards Managing Associate and beyond, rather than simply becoming the person everybody sends the awkward tax question to forever. Importantly, I wouldn’t restrict the conversation to lawyers who have spent their entire careers in a dedicated tax team. If you have already developed meaningful tax exposure and can demonstrate the technical ability and genuine interest to build your career in the area, I’d be interested in speaking with you. It could suit somebody from a corporate background who has increasingly gravitated towards the tax side of deals. Someone with real estate tax exposure. Or an existing tax lawyer who wants a broader client base and more direct involvement in significant transactions. The Newcastle market does not produce enormous numbers of specialist tax lawyers. Which is exactly why the right people tend to be valuable. If you are technically strong, commercially minded and enjoy getting your head around the sort of problem that makes everybody else in the room quietly look towards the tax lawyer, this is worth a conversation.
