Summary of the Role: The primary role of this post would be the undertaking of the weekly testing of all decontamination equipment in the sterile services department, pathology and associated departments as and when required. The role would also require the post holder to perform duties covering the maintenance and operation of steam boiler plant including statutory testing of safety devices and specialised ventilation plant. Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and breakdown maintenance to all aspects of mechanical plant, machinery, distribution and associated services including work of a technical and/or non-routine nature. Undertake fault finding and repairs on a wide range of engineering plant, equipment and the full range of services essential to the operation of an acute hospital (including, but not restricted to building control systems, standby generators, low pressure hot water systems and associated pipe work, steam raising plant and associated equipment, kitchen equipment, operating theatre ventilation systems, industrial and domestic plumbing and drainage). In addition to maintenance & emergency repairs the post holder will be required to carry out installation & improvements works across all of QE Facilities' contracted sites. All work must be carried out in compliance with organisational & customer safety standards and national legislation.

Main duties of the job: To undertake the testing and maintenance of all decontamination equipment and associated plant under the PPM schedule of the Estates department and the attendance of breakdowns and fault diagnosis in order to affect a repair or a comprehensive report for the attendance of the main contractor or the service line manager. To respond to requests for repairs, faults and emergencies involving all aspects of mechanical, electrical & building services - The post holder will be required to assess the situation in the event of such requests or emergency situations and as a first measure, act to ensure safety of public/patients/other staff then to either affect repairs or summon assistance as required. QE Facilities operates a multi skilled policy and the post holder is required to demonstrate a high degree of cross trade flexibility beyond the boundaries of their core skills including Electrical and Building Maintenance works supported with in-house training. The post holder will be expected to carry out minor electrical/building work, in connection with their main duties at the discretion of the supervising officer, which, under extreme conditions shall include gritting and snow clearing. Actively participate in the operation of the QE Facilities helpdesk, including the timely completion of work dockets via a PDA (hand held computer) this includes job sheets with a Tradesman's report detailing time taken and materials used for costing purposes.

In addition we provide consultancy services, advising clients on all aspects of establishing a subsidiary company within an NHS body to the provision of VAT compliance advice. QE Facilities work to their own Terms and Conditions and these are not the same as Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust Terms and Conditions. This is not an Agenda for Change Pay Rate. We do not hold a sponsorship license and are unable to offer employment under any sponsorship arrangement.

Job responsibilities: Able to work independently and on own initiative to manage workload. Able to provide, receive and interpret routine/technical information. Able to work in adverse environmental conditions (i.e. ducts, restricted spaces, boiler house, inclement weather, etc.). Demonstrate high degree of cross trade flexibility, including building maintenance. Able to work with discretion/ in a sensitive manner in and around patient situation.

Person Specification:

  • Knowledge: Must be able to work and act on his/her own initiative with no supervision. Possess the ability to work and communicate effectively in a pleasant manner with all other staff across QE Facilities contracted sites. Must be able to communicate positively with customers, patients and staff from other departments & organisations. Must be adaptable and flexible in all areas of work. Be fully aware of Health & Safety responsibilities relating to their work and possess sufficient technical knowledge to avoid any danger to themselves, colleagues or users of any QEF contracted sites. Be able to provide and receive routine and technical information from colleagues and non-technical staff to enable safe use of complex hospital equipment. Provide advice or instruction on safe use of equipment to non-technical staff, carers or patients. Heating engineering/ Pipe fitting skills.
  • Experience: Must have completed a suitable Mechanical or Electrical Apprenticeship. Good customer services and customer interaction. Maintenance experience in hospitals or a similar environment. Industrial and domestic plumbing and drainage.
  • Qualifications: City & Guilds craft Certificates Mechanical (Essential) or equivalent. Electrical and/or Mechanical BTec ONC or relevant experience. Current UK driving licence. HNC/HND.
