TSCM Engineer

A TSCM (Technical Surveillance Countermeasures) Engineer is responsible for protecting sensitive information and communications from unauthorized surveillance. They perform TSCM Services to detect and neutralize threats such as bugs, eavesdropping devices, and other forms of surveillance used to gather intelligence or conduct espionage.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct physical and electronic sweeps for surveillance devices (bugs, cameras, tracking devices, etc.) in high-security areas.
• Utilize specialized equipment like spectrum analyzers, non-linear junction detectors (NLJD), and thermal cameras to identify surveillance threats.
• Provide recommendations for protecting physical spaces and communication systems against eavesdropping.
• Assess risks associated with electronic surveillance in client or company environments.
• Advise clients on how to mitigate vulnerabilities related to their security systems, communication methods, and operational procedures.
• Design, install, and configure counter-surveillance systems.
• Test and calibrate security equipment to ensure it is functioning optimally and remains effective against evolving threats.
• Investigate potential surveillance breaches and respond to incidents where a threat is detected.
• Work with other departments (such as IT or physical security) to develop an appropriate response strategy.
• Provide technical advice to clients regarding security policies and best practices for preventing eavesdropping or other forms of covert surveillance.
• Train staff members on proper security measures to ensure ongoing protection.
• Create detailed reports documenting the results of TSCM sweeps, including findings, analysis, and recommended actions.
• Maintain accurate records of performed surveys and inspections.
• Stay up-to-date on the latest surveillance technology and countermeasure techniques.
• Continuously improve and update TSCM practices in response to emerging threats.

Qualifications:

• A degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is often preferred.
• Certifications in security-related fields (e.g., Certified Protection Professional (CPP), TSCM certifications) are a plus.
• Prior experience in surveillance detection, counterintelligence, security, or similar roles.
• Hands-on experience with TSCM equipment and tools.
• Knowledge of electronic communication systems, RF (radio frequency) technologies, and signal detection techniques.
• QCC TSCM Modules and Diploma.

Skills:

• Strong understanding of wireless and wired communication systems.
• Ability to use technical surveillance detection equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzers, NLJD).
• Familiarity with encryption technologies and methods of secure communications.
• Strong experience in the use of IT including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and data input onto databases.
• Ability to detect and analyze complex technical issues related to surveillance.
• Quick thinking and adaptability when responding to threats or incidents.
• Ability to carefully examine environments and communications for subtle or hidden surveillance devices.
• Ability to produce clear, comprehensive reports and communicate findings to clients or senior management.
• Strong interpersonal skills to work with clients, security teams, and other stakeholders.
• The individual must be hardworking and have strong communication skills.
• The individual must be able to travel extensively overseas.
• The individual must hold a valid UK Driving Licence.
• The individual must work well in a team, as well as being able to act as Team Leader.
• Ability to engage with customers and contractors in a polite and helpful manner.

Technical Experience and Knowledge:

• Member of TSCMi.
• Confidently conduct TSCM Services in accordance with current legislations, company SOP’s and QMS.
• Experience of undertaking TSCM Services in a variety of environments in the UK and overseas.
• Informed of current and emerging espionage threats, vulnerabilities, trends and report and share with the wider QCC team.
• Develop extensive knowledge and experience of researching, handling and maintaining the TSCM equipment.
• Experience in Communications/Engineering.
• Previous experience of working in an office environment.
